I used to go trawling & the old adage of never underestimate the power of the sea can also be applied to the river

Good to hear you're ok. Did you see any fish while you were in there and did you take the temperature?
What tackle did you use - flies, lines, etc?

To busy looking in how to get out than looking for fish!!!
IG 10/11 Floating line (not experienced enough to use a sinker) with a 9ft sink tip & a Willie Gunn Copper tube
Must admit I was struggling a bit with the sink tip & reverted to a normal nylon leader
All in all I would think you more experienced guys would do okay up there

I am due to fish Sluie in mid April with a pal who has fished there before. From what I gather the beat has been lightly let of late and certainly not let through the Fish Dee website. As no Gillie has been present I would imagine catch reports would have been iffy(if you caught loads of fish at £45 a day you might keep it quiet? but then you might also keep quiet if you didn't too)anyway if anyone has any useful info it would be appreciated, have done well at K+B above at that time of year so fish are there-abouts. Sloggi, I'm on here in a few weeks, looks as if I'll need the lifejacket and a change of clothes. Was it the jetty that caught them out.. ? SAY

How was kemnay? The maryculter gang had a springer last week from Kemnay, great little fish of about 6 - 7 lbs. There are also a few seatrout in, which surprised me, clean fish of about a couple of pounds!
I plan to be out wednesday and thursday. Are you about?

The guy I usually fish with was one of them - he always takes a change of clothes I'm also having a day on here soon - sounds like quite an experience. He said he saw half-a-dozen springers, but didn't catch anything, except perhaps the flu.

D Hi Dave, Kemany was pretty coloured today - even more than yesterday. Nothing this morning - had three kelts yesterday and saw a guy take another. I'll try to get an hour or so at lunchtime Thusday at Maryculter. My other rod will probably be fishing too - he's called Stefan. Let me know where you are those days and I'll try to find you for a chat.

Thanks for the good wishes guys but sadly it dawned bright and stayed that way with a bloody killer of a wind (for Sluie) Nice to get out and get some fishing done. I saw 3 fish and I connected with one briefly when trying out my chums rod but it fell off almost as immediately as it was on Bloody hard going today - maybe I'm getting soft Has inspired me to do more this season though

What was your impression of this beat? Best pools? Likely spots in high/medium water? Is it easy to fish or not.....apart from the wading in some parts (-:
I have a day booked in early April.
cheers

I liked Sluie, although it's not a huge beat. The owner turned up at about 11am to point out a few highlights of the beat and open up the hut - nice chap, sure he'll do the same for most punters earlier in the day. If you can bung out 30yds you don't need to wade deeply at all over most of the beat Best pools - hmmm. Kelpie at the top of the beat looks nice but I suspect that the 'jetties' will be very productive at most spring heights - there was 2'8" @ the guage on the Potarch bridge this morning. Certainly kelpie wouldn't want much less water IMHO. The hut pool beneath the jetties (also known as suicide - I think?) is lovely but wanted a lot less water from the left bank to fish nicely - there's a muppet placed croy-type- thing over half way down the pool (whose idea was that?) which kind of buggers up the end of the pool. There is another pool beneath but I'm not sure of the name, you'd need to be brave to wade it at this height and I'm a big jessie so I didn't wade it today Looks like it would be productive though. That's pretty much it - easy to fish? Yes, especially if you're a handy spey caster. Likely spots - I'd bank on the 'jetties' and suicide. Final thoughts - currently very good value at £25/day + VAT, later on at £45 + VAT (and still 2 rods plus the other side) it wouldn't want to be more expensive.

Cheers. Sounds very interesting. I'll be taking a friend who's not that experienced with salmon fishing, henced we booked something less expensive, but I'll try and keep him right. Hopefully the water will have dropped a little by then and I'll attempt to wade that pool you chickened out of I'll take a change of clothes with me Crathes first though.....can't wait
