A couple of friends and myself require some short notice fishing on 17th March, within 2 hours drive of Glasgow. Availability on the Tay is limited and I do not want to spend £70 per rod on Newtyle.
Looking at the Teith and have made some enquiries. Has anybody on the forum fished the Leny? If so, realistic chance of sport? Best time for springers? Does it fish well with the fly? Are there any good private beats?

It's alright folks, I've been told that it is narrow and suits worming better than fly

the lenny is a fast flowing short river from lubnig to teith. i have fished many a time for trout and seen little salmon evidence of salmon. though seen them in the loch and the river from voil to lubnig (the balvaig) which is a lovely single hander river and requires creeping about due to the gin clear water. but its a river where right time right place dictate your sport.
PS never seen anyone bait fishing for salmon on lenny when i have visited?

I agree - good advice from Hairy . East Haugh might be a good bet if they have availability (caught my first fish ever in the Boat Pool - 16lbs, single handed fly rod 6lb leader and a big Peter Ross - low water - September nineteen oatcake - (can remember every detail like it was yesterday) ;D .....got my second ever fish the following day but thats another story........got a soft spot for this water as you can tell . Get on the blower now Fruin..... you wont regret it (no 'hard sell' intended !!)

Evening all. Glad to hear you are sorted with East Haugh on the 17th. No full time ghillie but there will someone about to show you whats what I am sure (might even be me !!) . Failing this why not drop my good friend Ally Gowans an e-mail and for the price of a pint and a decent tub of potted heid I am sure AG will be more than happy to enlighten you in more ways than one . Nice 'new' hut to replace the "auld black hut". Pack your spinning kit just incase the water is high. Generally an 'open' beat with fairly straightforward wading with medium depth pools throughout (No2 sinker is adequate to cope with most pools). My favourite casts are Pol Treigh, Tomdachoile, Peg Leg's and Ferry Stream - all extremely 'sympathetic' to the fly fisher. Perfectly easy to roll cast off the bank IF the water is too high to get in about wading. Will give you a tarzan yell if I am somewhere on the banks ;D. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. It is always a pleasure meeting other forum regulars and putting faces to the names.

Fruin,
You'll enjoy EH - fished it for the first time April last year - cracking fly water, although none of us caught. Apparently, you don't see the running fish - they tend to stay well down, but keep on them with intermediates and wet IIs as several of the pools are deep and deceptively fast flowing. If I recall, the pool opposite the hut on the railway side is 17ft deep - doesn't look it.
Good luck, and keep us posted.
Altmor.

Sinkingtip(or anyone who has fished EH) - What is the best bank to fish from on this beat ? Ask the salmon Only joking. Don Reid who you will have arranged your fishing through favours the right bank, but you have to be good off your left shoulder to get the best out of the top of the beat from this bank. The left bank is tree free and you can wade. You can really only wade from Peglegs down on the right bank. If I was going for only the one day I'd probably start at the top on the left bank. If you pm me your email address I send you some more info.
