Duncanm, Pray that the river doesn't rise too much this week. I fished it with 1ft on the gauge (approx 2' 4" on Park Gauge) and you don't want more than that or your fishing from the hut down. I had a nice 12lb from the Lower Birkenbaud a week past Saturday. The wade is difficult but can be very rewarding Wading staff is a must, unless you like going for a swim in water that's about 41 degF SAY

Thanks for all the advice on the beat, most useful.
We were greeted with a river which rose overnight with snow melt and that was high, coloured and cold. However it was dropping slowly during the morning and because it was so high we decided not to wade, and simply fish off the bank. I dont think wading would have been safe for us, particularly on an unknown beat.
We fished from the Island down, though I feel the flow was to heavy for much success and as we approached the hut it was clear that any taking fish would be from the hut down, as SAY suggested. We saw a number of fish jumping and head and tailing as we fished towards the bottom of the beat and as we reached the grassy bank at the bottom of the beat I hooked into a small though enthusiastic fish, which gave a great account of itself in the strong flow.
I hollered to Duncan to get the net, which we had stashed at the Hut, but he did not hear me. He did however see the rod kicking and rushed to help, net in one hand and camera in the other. After a great fight he netted a spirited springer of some 7 - 8 lbs for me, which returned easily and well.
As Duncan finished the pool, in about the same place he had a savage take, which unfortunately did not connect.
Overall a great day out, difficult conditions due to the river levels but very pleasant. I look forward to another visit in lower water conditions, It looks like it could provide some great sport
