Fishing mostly on 'forth division' Westcountry rivers I am only too aware of the low numbers of fish that I am trying for. However a couple of times a season I will hit the right day and fish suddenly seem too easy to catch. Mindful of the low stocks I now stop once I have landed three and go and do something else or better still gillie for a friend. I make no distinction between fish kept or released (most go back), after landing three the challenge has gone out of it for me. Does anyone else do this or am I soft in the head?

It all depends on the river and the conditions.
If fishing a small spate stream during low water, and I manage to get a few fish from a pool, I will quit after a while and move on to fresh water, even if I am returning the fish. My reason is that you must have an idea of the number of fish in the system before indulging in catching many fish. If there are lots of fish about then, there should be some elsewhere. If there aren't, you could be disturbing the only run of fish in the river, when there is less oxygen content to aid their recovery.
If the water is up a bit and it is obvious that fresh fish are pouring in to the system then it will be different. If it is mostly running fish that you are catching, rather than fish that are stuck in a pool, then why not indulge?
It all comes down to percentages of fish going through to fish being caught. To this end, I would happily see fishing banned on certain stretches of water during periods of low water. It takes the sport away from fishing if you are fishing for a migratory fish that is trapped already.

i remember reading one of neil graesser's books where he recounts how he caught several in the morning and became jaded by the ease of the fishing. He told the ghillie he was off home and the ghillie says to him ' keep at them sir, there's many a day they make a damn fool of you.

Days of 3 plus fish are, i suppose, few and far between for most fisherman. The most i have caught in a day is 4, with several days of 3 fish particularly in 2004.
I return the vast majority of what i catch and believe that virtually every fish i return will survive when practising good C&R.
So when the good days roll, i make the most of them and enjoy it whilst it lasts.
