Zephead and I had a day on Aboyne Castle yesterday. Buoyed somewhat by the facts that our Forum moderator Mr Ritchie had a couple of fish from the beat earlier on in the week and that Colliedog had lost a twenty pound plusser on a beat downstream the previous evening, we were cautiously optimistic. What we hadn't bargained for was the heavy overnight rain which had put the river up to 3ft 3" and rising at 9am
The river was still rising when we started at Simonds and Lamont's corner but it was immediately noticeable that a few sea trout were pushing up the quiet water near the home bank. A move up to Crofts saw Zephead put on the "beastmeister" a shooting head made from the front end of a Master XLT, spliced to Airflo ridged running line and with a ultra fast sinking tip
It proved just what the Dr ordered though and soon Zep was playing a fish in the big water
which ultimately turned out to be a sea trout
The river started to drop around mid day and funnily enough so did the activity of the sea trout leading us to experiment with various rod and line combinations including the previously untried Loop Grey Line 16ft #11 with the Carron 85ft belly 10/11 floater (woosh when you got the timing right but I wish Carron would mark the belly of these lines).
We fished on to the evening giving Tanarmouth and The Lorne a go and with the with the river dropping quickly were hoping for some late action, unfortunately it never really developed and we only saw one fish show, again in Crofts, before calling it a day at 9.30pm as Jackie Fyfe was still way to high to fish
Nice beat and a helpful , experienced ghillie in Alec Coutts
