Fish Nith website describing "Excellent condition, perfect fly water" with several fish being reported. Maybe worth a visit before it drops right back down again

Plenty of fish running, grilse and salmon. Had 2 days last weekend but inexplicably failed to connect with any of the runners I covered. That's fishing!

Have not fished Dalswinton, however speak to Dougie Smith, number on Fish- Nith website. Look under beat descriptions/Dalswinton. Meanwhile I will ask around some locals for you. ATB Robbie

Dalswinton - fish the lower beat, if you have a choice, it has more holding water. The Upper beat has lovely water too, but the lower has the edge. Working up from the bottom of the beat:
Portrack Viaduct stream - very long stream/pool, holds fish all the way right down to the Viaduct. The willows on the first 1/3 of the pool are good lies. Get the fly right onto the other bank here. Fish the stream carefully right down to the viaduct. The tail holds resting fish that have run in from Portrack Beat.
Next pool up is the one before Ellisland - don't know name but it holds briefly resting fish - always worth a cast before trying Ellisland.
Ellisland - is another long pool, much deeper than the Viaduct but holds lots of fish. The neck is deep and holds fish, the pool is trickier the further down you go and the wading is deep, but not treacherous in the boulder sense. The tail can be very good and spend plenty time in this part, casting across to the boards.
The stream between Ellisland and the next pool up, The Scar, again is worth a cast, but don't hang aaround as the Scar is a wonderful pool for fishing. Go up the path, pass the seats and go in to the water well up beyond the willow - wade right down this pool ,it is a good 150 yard fish, and holds fish all the way down to the tail. The trees on the first half of the pool about 1/3 way down before the eroded cliff begins are very good lies. Fish often hold mid stream in the upper part or even nearer to the bank you will be fishing.
Dougie Smith will keep you right. I fished it last September and had a very good day.
As for tactics, a 15' slow/medium sink tip with a #6-10 cascade should cover most eventualities.

Fished Barjarg yesterday with Robbie, the river was low and clear, looking at the catch return book we noticed all recent fish taken were taken on a #10 cascade, so I opted for that. Robbie fished one of my hand-tied nessC's. Seen a few fish moving but none of us hooked up, Robbie blames my flee I blame his thrashing of the pools ;D ;D ;D. (only joking Robbie ;D) Anyway my next choice of flee was a #10 Executioner, got half way through the sand beds pool, had a really strong pool and head-shake then it was gone. Such is life! Although we had no fish, it was a great day and a good laugh. Will be back soon. Mike

It was a good day. No fish, but still we took advantage at the end of the day, and waded through the lies (we were going home and no one else was there). This showed us depth of runs etc. so next visit we may be more accurate.

I am thinking of fishing the mid nithsdale water the back end of October or Bajarg. I understand that the association water is varied ( fly, spin etc) ) but would appreciate anyones advice on it. Bajarg looks like a straight forward fly water

Stephen,
I fished there last week,,water was low,but there is good enough fly water ,from the hut and below,,given 3 or 4 inches of water,,the whole beat would be perfect for the fly.

Hi Salmonking are you referring to the Mid Nith beat ? I am thinking of staying in Thornhill, can anyone recommend decent accomadation ? I am hoping the maps provided are going to show accurate access points ?
