Please can anyone using Perfects tell me the capacity of a 3.5" in terms of line weight and backing length?

It would depend what line you were planning to use a long 75ft head would need less backing than a short 50ft head.
A 500yrd spooll would probably be more than enough.

I would not go more than a 7 weight.

Da*m and bl*st! The reel seat won't fit my 10' 7wt. I certainly won't be filing it down though.

if you do a search on the speypages.com board there is a solution in a thread about perfects. Someone has used a clip from a cycle shop to secure the reel. lightweight and quite an elegant solution.

Yes, I saw that, but a reel of the class of a Perfect requires a better solution than a plastic clip, in my humble opinion. Mind you, it doesn't require me to go as far as using a cane rod! I'm too old for that!

A classy reel deserves to be used, and filing the foot down would be a crime. Im sure you could polish up a jubilee clip if that would make you feel any better!

You could always get a new reel seat fitted on your rod ;D

I expect the Bloke would fit a suitable reel-seat to a 10ft#7 if I can finance it!

Does anyone know of a rod in current production that has a reel-seat which is big enough? For that matter is such a reel-seat made?

Pacific Bay, or Pac Bay, make some well machined reel seats that would accomodate bigger reels. They are also very reasonably priced but only seem to be available from the states. Less than $20 and about $10 postage. You would be amazed at how similar these reel seats are to the ones fitted on a lot of top quality spey rods!!!
