Whats the difference between the Orvis Battenkill 10/11 reel (sadly discontinuid) and the Orvis Spey reel?
I bought the latter on ebay for £80 and I suspect I could have got the former for about £50, whats the difference in design, size, weight, capacity, drag etc or as I suspect are they the same reel badged differently?
many thanks - John

Is the Orvis spey reel you bought like this one that didn't sell recently? cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7231951361If so, it looks from the pictures to be more or less identical (apart from a perforated back plate) to the old Leeda/BFR Magnum 200D, which used to be made in the Cornish factory owned by Orvis. It wouldn't be surprising if they sold some with the Orvis badge; I believe they were also sold in the US as Cortlands. If they are indeed the same, then I'm sorry to say I think you paid rather a lot. Magnum 200D's mostly sell in the £25-£35 range on ebay. They're decent reels, though, and have plenty of capacity for all except the biggest spey lines. Certainly no problem with a 65' head, and realistically it'll probably take a 75' too.

Hi John I think charlieH is right, the Spey backplate looks like the Magnum to me. I bought a Battenkill Disc 10/11 about 7 years ago new for £80. It is a cageless design, weighs 6 1/4oz and is 3 3/4inch diameter and takes a WF10 and 275 yards of backing. The Battenkill is a much smaller reel and I have found it is too small to use with a 15 foot rod and 10 or 11 line so i use it with my 13 foot Grilse/summer rod and a 9 weight for which it is perfect. The Spey weighs 8 1/2 oz and is 4inch in diameter and sold for less than the Battenkill, it takes a DT10 and 325 yards of backing. Probably a better size for use with a 15 footer.
