Hi to everyone, I think its superb to have a Salmon dedicated forum. Well done to you Mr Yellow Belly . Its nice to know that us mere mortals can speak to some of you top Salmon men. Which leads me nicely to a question to you all: I have booked a weeks fishing on the Alness in early September through some sound advice and wondered if anyone had any info/tips they would share with me for my eagerly awaited trip please. Thank you, Macsalmo

Did a bit of early fishing on the alness and frankly the river was fishless. However we were told that and Roger Dowsett (troutquest boss) is a lovely man. be prepared for some rough roads down to the river though.

The Alness can be a great wee river. Given a bit of water sport can be fast and furious.
September is probably the best month on the river. I fished the club water a few evenings this past September, I didn't catch, but the river was stuffed with fish. Great to see.
No need to go in heavy handed. A 12-13 ft rod coupled with a foating line - sink-tip for high water- will be more than enough. If the water is low I tend to stick to micro tubes or size 12-16 flies. In high water 8s and 10s. No need for chest waders. Thighs will do the trick.

Thanks for that Gordon, Sorry for the delayed reply. Sounds good providing mother nature lets us have some of that wet stuff! I believe the river has controlled flow from the loch at the top. Did you find that this helped or not ?

The river has a dam at the top of the system, however I have never known it to be of any help in times of low water.

During a severe drought in 2003 I benefited from just a 6 inch rise in water levels. Monday-Friday blank, saturday 2 fish in the morning soon after the water was released. That was Beat 6 on the Novar Estate.
Tight lines, you will enjoy it (a 4x4 does come in handy).
