Keep your fly in the water, you'll be in with a good chance of a fish. Some nice water for the fly and generally easy going. Not sure what the water temp is, suspect it's still quite high. No need to fish as deep as on Tweed or with such large flies. Sink tip, size 8 Ally, should do it.

Only fished the Ettrick once in October, courtesy of Mick of Bloke Rods fame. Rarely seen pools so stuffed full of fish. A lot of the fish will be stale springers that have developed a nervy disposition, so, in anything less than two feet, a stealthy approach should reward you well. While the stale fish may not be your target, if you spook them there is a strong chance that any fresher fish will also go off the take. So, if possible, in lower water, fish well back from the waters edge and use as light a line as you reckon you will require. A six or a seven in the slower stretches, with a nine in stronger flows. However, I only fished the upper to middle Ettrick and this advice only applies to these stretches. A black brahan, bann shrimp, anything orange and shrimpy should see you all right.
