Here's my thought for the day. Tomorrow i'll finally get my first intermediate line. It occured to me that i won't be able to mend it as it will be under the water, so what is the solution? Do i throw a huge mend in after casting? that's obviously not ideal. Or do i let it be and fish flies suited to fast movement? Any advice appreciated.

With it being an intermediate, you'll have a few extra moments to make a mend compared to a sinker. You could withhold a bit of line and make a mend part through the swing.

Spot on advice, although I find that even I (who casts too square) tend to cast much more down and acros rather than across and down (if you follow me) with anything other than a floater. Is it just me?
