Just bought one of the old Daiwa 800 series salmon reels on a whim - paid just under twenty quid [e-bay] - the reel has never been used and comes with original box etc. I quite like these older reels and still use my marquis 2 on a regular basis. The actual reel I bought is the Daiwa 812, made, I believe, by Youngs - anyone have one or know anything about this particular reel?

I recently bought an 812 on ebay and it is BETTER built than the Marquis 2, which I shall now be selling. The drag system is better engineered and it won't rot around the rim like the Hardy. Mine cost me £37 with a spare spool (I need another one if anybody is selling) and two perfect lines. I look forward to using it later this year. Good luck with your new acquisition!

They are great reels, just what you would expect from [J W YOUNG]. Who have been taken over by [MASTERLINE]. And the present day reels are not a patch on the old ones, plastic & they have'nt got that lovely old click. I have had a DAIWA 813, which is the wider model, for 20 odd years and only had it repaired once, this guy in redditch used to work youngs & does reel repairs; www.milltackle.co.uk [garry mills]. centrepin, spin, fly reels.
