hi guys, i would like a short double hander, any of you know what the shortest available is? i think bruce and walker done a 11"3 but cant remember the name, the other choice i have is to just add an extension to one of my single handers but not sure how long this would last, also would the action of a single hander suit a double hand cast. scotty.

B&W make the 11' 3" Salmo/Sewin rated for #8 lines. I have one and it's a fine rod - it easily handles grilse and sea-trout. Good for short range casts and excellent when fishing tree-lined pools. Spey casts really well - overheads ok.
I often use it with a sunk lure on an intermediate line which it handles well enough.
Most companies make short double-handers between 12'-13'

The Partridge series of rods do a double hander from 9'6" aftm7 up. They have a screw in section- see here -http://www.fishingthedeveron.co.uk/Ian_Gordon_Partridge_rods_and_reels.htm
Give me a shout if interested I will try and keep you right.

thanks guys, frank i have thought about the partridge before but never realy got round to buying one ended up buying a hardy sirrus 5 weight , do you think it is possible to adapt a single hander to fit a screw in extension, i dont think the pop in ones would stay put very long, i have an old hardy marquis and a greys grx that i could try it with, bearing in mind i dont want to knacker the rods totaly. , has any of you guys tried to fit a screw in extension before? scotty.

The Ian Gordon Partridge 12' #7/8 is a delight to use.
Regarding a screw-in extension, I did this very successfully with a 10' Guideline LPXe. The trick is to have a long a threaded insert as possible up the butt of the blank to stop any chance of rocking or twisting due to casting leverage. It must be a very good fit and glued well.

I have made many screw in adaptors for my own rods and for others, it's not a very difficult job - the standard thread is 3/8 BSF. Bogyoch's advice is sound regarding the fit and gluing (you need to de-grease well before gluing).
In theory the 'pop-in' spigot type should offer the safest connection considering the high 'bending' forces at the joint ( the spigot taper must be an exact match to that of the butt of the blank though ) but, providing a screw-in one is not allowed to loosen, this should be OK for an extension up to about 12" long.

I have a Dawia Exceler 12ft for a 8/9, its a really nice light rod that handles grilse well. At the opposite end of the spectrum I think Loomis do a 11.6ft double hander, bit on the pricey side though ;D

I use a Daiwa 11'3" Whisker" 7-9 which has a short permanent extension allowing one to fish single or double handed. It will happily handle a Rio Midspey 8 and is still light enough to make playing anything over 2lbs enjoyable. No longer in production but they sometimes sell on ebay for around £40.
