I have one, they are a nice light summer rod with a through action. I use mine for summer grilse on small to medium rivers and its perfect for that. It got a good write up in T&S last year I think (can't remember the month). They are supposed to be about £170 RRP but you can pick them up fairly easily for £140 E

bulltrout, trout and salmon, June 2005. daiwa exceler length-12ft aftm 8/9 price £175 Kenny Macdonald This is the kind of quality rod i would expect from daiwa. It had a crisp, positive action, putting out 30 yards with ease. A first rate summer rod with an excellent handle and real seat. performance 9 finish 8 value for money 9 Grant Sutherland this is probably the best 12ft rod of those on test. The action is reasonably forgiving with good reserves of power. In fact it had as much power as most of the 13ft rods. A nice clean build with a very comfortable handle. performance 8 finish 8 value for money 9 Graham Mackenzie A quality slim blank, matching a 9 line perfectly. The action is very forgiving and 30 yard casts are achieved with little effort. A high standard of finish with a nice pewter-coloured reel seat. performance 9 finish 9 value for money 9 Hope this helps

The 12ft Daiwa Wilderness would also be worth looking at - cheaper to buy and with as good, if not a better write up from the same rod testers in the above post.
I havn't fished with either of them, so can't give my informed comparison, but there may be those on this forum who have tried both models, and I would like to hear which they think performs best overall.
Any takers ?

Hi Guys - looking at the 14' Excelar for the missus. Appears to be the same, or very similar, spec as the 'old' Whisker MK2 14' - is it ??...or is it better ??. Basically what I am saying is the Excelar retails at about £165 but I have found a mint Whisker MK2 for £85. Help please. On the subject of line weight the rod is rated 9/10. Intend to get her rigged up with a full floater and slow sink (double tapers) - does anyone have an opinion on whether the 9 weight would fish better, or just as well as the 10 weight. Thanks in anticipation
