I'm trying to find out about rods suitable for casting light baits (like rapalas) from 5grams. Has anyone any recommenations? I notice rapala rods tend to be short, presumably giving them a fast tip speed.

I use an 11ft ABU Elite which is quite flexable specifically for Rapalas. Used in conjunction with 2olb TAKE (0.255mm) which helps alot with casting light wieghts. You could obviously scale down both the rod length and breaking strain depending on where you fish.

The 14lbs stuff especialy is very fine for it's strength and adds yards to your cast when fishing light baits. But don't use braid with a tip actioned rod. Just try playing a lively fish under the rod tip and you'll see what I mean. I use an 11' Mac Martin ( Greys ) Bait/Spin and an old 12' Carbon worming rod built by Paul Boote way back in the late eighties. Both have lovely through actions ideal for braid. For smaller rivers , I use a 9' Gord Burton Hellraiser. Awful name but a great wee rod for braid. Cortland made them but I'm not sure if they're available anymore.

I use a 8' Greys Missionary spin for 5-25g lures. Easily casts small lures. I use 10lb and 14lb braid.
Smashing well-made rod - very tough and strong. Handles anything up to 10lb failry easily. Good for sea-trout/grilse.

Gord Burton doesn't seem that bad a name to me... I actually have a 9' Gord Burton Hellraiser (as new) that I never use, if anyone wants to make me a silly offer they can have it. I'd go for the 14lb Berkely Fireline as well, it's very good and doesn't twist up like nylon will. If you try it you will never go back to nylon. For my light spinning I use an old 10' Diawa fly rod that was rated for a 7/8 line. I simply changed the rings and moved the reel seat up a bit. It makes a much better spinning rod than it ever did a fly rod! Andy

Was "Gord" once on Matt Hayes show catching pike and eating Weetabix? If so, he's a right nutter In a good way, though. He certainly knows how to catch fish.

Met him at P.A.C ( Pike Anglers Club ) conference a few years back and a nicer wee man you couldn't meet . Not so sure about his dog. Both absolutely barking though ! Don't worry , I've seen the light and don't hang about with pikeys, sorry , pikers anymore.
