Does anyone out there have experience of using a Mastery XLT 8/9 line (old model) with the Sage 15' 1" rod (green blank)?
I've read somewhere that these lines are heavy for their rating, and to set them up with a rod rating one higher than the maximum line number, i.e. a 10 for an 8/9 line. My normal casting range is 30-35 yards.

Ah a fellow Tyne angler. It's for the lower river (not the FED), and I don't want any more of this stripping in yards of running line business. I currently use a Lee Wulff intermediate (80' head) with this rod and it works well, maybe I'll just get a floater of this type instead.

Try a Carron 85 instead there may be one in the line pool. The xlt is well over weight, typical American.

With the Mastery XLT rated 8/9 you will have absolutely no problem with distance casting and as you indicated, if you're fed up pulling in loop upon loop, you won't need to pull in much more than a few loops before casting.
More importantly however as Springer intimated, it most certainly, without any shadow of doubt, leads the field in rod breakages and unless you have already tried it with the Sage, be very careful, it's a beast of a line and would probably be more suited to a second world war tank aerial, or a poker for those who have never cast with one !
