Hi Guys - buying the missus a 14' Daiwa Whisker MK2 (£85) WHEN I can decide if there is any difference between this rod and the 'new' version - Daiwa Excelar 14' (£165). Any thoughts on this ? Also, I quite fancy the Shakespeare Pflueger Trion Salmon Fly reel to match this rod (T&S "Best in Test"). The question is, which model would be better for this rod - the 2858 width 4" or the 2857 width 3.75" ?. I would imagine that I will get her N0. 9 DT lines as the rod is rated 9/10 or does anyone feel that I would be better off with the 10 weight lines. Any help / advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The smaller reel has done me fine with no.9 lines for salmon fishing. I use it happily with rods up to 14'. Good reel.

Thanks Stoater. I wasnt sure if the smaller reel would look out of scale with the 14' rod but I guess the 1/4" difference shouldnt create a problem with either balance or appearance. Thanks for the reply.....anybody else?

For many years I fishing this same rod with #10 lines which I found perfect. That was with a Magnum 200D reel, which was also very much to my liking.

Hi Rob. #10 or #9 lines....looks like the #10 is better? I am sure I have read someplace (Falkus maybe) that, as a general rule, when presented with a choice of line weights for any given rod that you should always go for the heavier weight ? I take it that the rod you refer to is the MK2 14' ?

Yep the Mk II. I snapped the tip section in my car door a couple of years ago so it is no more I have a 12ft MKII which is rated 7-9 and I fish a 8/9 Snowbee 2D with this. My personal preference would be to go for the heavier line rating, but ultimately it's a matter of choice and ability I guess.

Thanks Rob - like I say it is for her indoors to get started. Going to go for the #10 lines and the Diawa Lochmor 10/11 reel as suggested by Springer. Thanks again

Just to let you know what the 'up shot' was. Phoned Norris today to order the Lochmor 10/11. Spoke to a guy who seemed quite clued up. Told me that the LM would not hold a No. 10 Shaky Worcester Floater owing to its excessive bulk, apparently, in the middle section - it could but with less than 50yds of backing ! He also said that IF I dropped the LM it was more likely to shatter than the Pflueger due to its "light construction" and aluminium composite alloy. That was a pity as the more traditional appearance of the LM reel appealed more to my sense of aesthetics. BTW the Shakespear Worcester fly lines were highly recommended via my post on another thread titled "Simple Question - Best DT Line". Ended up with the Pflueger Trion (excellent reel I know), an Aircel Floater (less bulky in the belly) and the Shaky Worcester Medium Sink. Didn't realise until after the biz had been done and I checked the 'spec' the the Aircel FF was only 25 yds but by that time I had neither the inclination or desire to call them back so it looks like the missus will just have to be content with putting out a short line for the foreseeable !. Cheers guys. ps - when questioned about the drag system on the Pflueger being less superior to the Lochmor he actually stated quite categorically that they were exactly the same and the "every single reel, regardless of make, comes out of one of three factories in China"....apparently.

ps - when questioned about the drag system on the Pflueger being less superior to the Lochmor he actually stated quite categorically that they were exactly the same and the "every single reel, regardless of make, comes out of one of three factories in China"....apparently. The drags are not the same. I have the dubious benefit of working some 15 min drive from the Great Rip Off Centre. If I require some small items, today it was some Al tubes, I nick in and spend time "testing" all the latest gear. Today I just happened to test every fly reel on display including the trion and Lochmor disc. Springer is correct in that the Lochmor has a more powerful drag, probably too powerful, although the drag adjustment was probably fine enough that you could prevent going straight into "snap" mode.and for the money it is very good value. I would be happy with either the Lochmor or Trion. Cast reels Like the Lochmor are always prone to breaking if they get dropped, but all reels can be ruined by a fall. Had a look at all the salmon rods on display, did not cast any, just had a few swishes with most as I'm thinking of buying another around the 13' mark. Liked the Scott M Signature, guideline (both LC and Lpxe) also the Sharpes gordon. Kinda promised myself I would not buy another thin blanked Daiwa after my Alltmor breakages but the SM is tempting me. I must admit to getting confused with all this fast /medium action stuff. I can cast with most things, but before I purchase a new rod I'll test them all at the GROC and then buy elsewhere

Just going by what the guy told me gents - really appreciate your input and never doubted for a minute your advice and knowledge. Foolishly thought I was getting it from the horses mouth so to speak (Norris). Will know better next time. Thanks again.

Unfortunately that is the sort of stuff that gets us all tarred with the same brush- bad advice and only after your money. Springer is spot on on the drag. I do not stock the lochmor reels any more as they are a bit heavier and I found it difficult to fit all lines on them with backing. I have a 7/8 0n the shelf and I can not get all a DT8 or WF 8 line on the reel let alone any backing. But taking Alan's and JN observations perhaps a scientific Anglers line may fit as they are only 26m.

Thank god i held onto my old Daiwa 813w, now that was a reel made by J W YOUNG, pity they sold everything out to Masterline and ever since that the british fly reel industry just went downhill. Even BFR was taken over by Orvis in 2003, and probably they will be made in China. Shakespeare its been said has four huge factories over there, making everything for the fishing trade. The Daiwa was based on the 1500 series of young's reels and are still very popular today, you have to look carefully for a good one, very hard to come by a good one....

Sinkingtip-ping me a PM with address etc.
I have a 9/10 Lee Wulff 65 ft heed you can have for nowt that has been used once/twice at a push that might get t't missus casting more sweetly than with a DT depending on what the other experts on lines for 14 footers suggest. If you don't want it then happy to mail it onto another forum member-preferably a beginner you tackle hoarders out there.
Fell victim to that great North Cumbrian trick of asking for something slightly different to whats on the shelves, the myopic one goes for a Sunday afternoon wander round the stock room and then puts the bloody item I didn't want in a bag like it was the item I asked for without me knowing (a 75 ft head in this instance) and you get home and find its wrong........!
Twas the same afternoon they told myself and the Earl of Chorley, who were spending our ill gotten winnings from Appleby trot, with some Mr Toad chest pufffed pride, that they were no longer stocking B&W because of cost, crap action, breakages, lack of lifetime thrash the tar out of it and we''ll refund it guarantee etc.
Now a useful stopping off point for spare nylon and things you forgot on the way back from the charming Mr Robinsons outlet further South on the M6 IMHO.

I'm definitely no beginner, and my wife may say a hoarder, but if no-one's interested in the Lee Wulff then I would be. Maybe exchange some beer tokens for it!
