Not relevant to most of you lucky Scots, but:
An important reminder: don’t forget to renew rod licences before you venture out fishing (licences expire 31 March 2006). Any angler aged 12 years or over, fishing for salmon, trout, freshwater fish or eels in England (except the River Tweed), Wales or the Border Esk and its tributaries in Scotland must have an Environment Agency rod licence. New licences for 2006/07 are now available, prices

Always wondered. How much is the licence and what do you actually get for the money?

It's £65 a season for salmon & sea trout. I suppose the money goes towards bailiffing and fishery management costs. They've reduced the number of bailiffs in Wales, but not the licence fee.

Munro, you may not have to wonder long,Jungle drums are saying that Rod Licences are coming to a river near YOU !. I am told that the idea is being put forward to the Edinburgh balloons by the Scottish Natural Heritage Balloons. I seriously cannot see it NOT happening in the fairly near future. Hard luck Elwyman and nae luck munro..

I would be interested to see the justifications for imposing what would amount to a tax on anglers in Scotland -thats all it would be. Mind you that profligate bunch in Holyrood probably needs all the cash it can get to keep the expenses trough full!
