Hi all,
In anticipation of my Spey trip in a couple of weeks (very excited!) I gather I need to replace all my tube trebles with tube doubles.
I gather BMDs have a large sizing for their size but could anyone recommend a generic size for either the BMD or salar tubes (or loop for that matter) which would suit typical tube flies such as bottles, collie dogs etc?
Ta,
Jon

Loop in size 6 and 8 look ok in tubes in the 0.75" - 1.5" range to my eye. Over to the experts now!

I think the Salars are much better hookers for salmon than Loop, although I prefer loop on Grilse and small tubes less than 3/4 inch, IME the small salars don't penetrate as easily as Loop on small fish and are too heavy for the smaller/lighter fly. I think it was 9's and 11's for Salar and 6 & 8's for Loop.

I think the Salars are much better hookers for salmon than Loop Really I use the Salar because I think they are attractive but I've snapped the silver hooks twice on salmon. However, I think the Loop hooks are really outstanding - great hook-hold. I guess it's a confidence thing so it's good to hear your positivity with Salars. The guy I fish with swears by BMDs - and they seem good and good value as Loop hooks are pricey.

guys thanks all for your contributions so far but what sizes for flies like temple dogs, collie dogs, pbps etc on 15/22mm bottles etc.
Am thinking of going for silver salars in 7 (for larger tubes) and 9 (the rest)?

However, I think the Loop hooks are really outstanding - great hook-hold. I am surprised to hear they snapped I'll need to keep an eye on that one. I was a keen advocate of using loops and still use them on bottles as the salars are way too heavy, however I went through a phase of poor hookups in the autumn 2 years ago, seemingly good takes coming free after 30 seconds or so and of the fish that i did land they were hooked in the front of the mouth, changed over to Salars and problem was solved instantly, good hook hold in the scissors or in the back of the mouth. Although its possible that a change up in size of hook may have also solved the problem. At the time I was sure the loop was taking just that little bit longer to bite and take hold within the fish's mouth. I put this down to the less aggressive shape and the more open gape profile of the loop hook.
