There was I fishing away on the Doon today when my Daiwa 812 reel went silent and went into free wheel mode. An internal investigation found that one of the pawls had broken. I swopped it for the good one but the tension on the check is not what it was. Any suggestions on where to get replacement pawls? I suspect that the reel was made by J. W. Young and that the pawls will be similar to their own brand reels. The picture (taken before the breakage) shows the type of pawls required. Many thanks Builnacraig

Hi,
Surely the pawls would be the same. It would be important to replace the damaged pawl with the other previously unused pawl and make sure it is pointing in the correct direction ( as per photograph).

I've heard that the pawls are exactly the same as those used for a Hardy Marquis. I do not have a Youngs or a Daiwa reel so cannot check (excuse the pun - unintentional). Any good tackle dealer should get you Hardy pawls.

Thanks for the advice guys. I did switch the good pawl for the broken one but there wasn't the same tension on the spring, and therefore on the reel drag.
I will investigate the Hardy pawl with local tackle shop.
Cheers
