Anyone used this rod? - some say it is a much stiffer rod than the MkII - I prefer a fast rod with a stiffer action but don't want to buy something that needs to be drastically overlined to load.

Thanks for that Alan - also see a nice Alltmor S 14' #9/10 on ebay - anyone familar with this particular rod? - I know there was an issue regarding breakages with this range, buy I'm interested in their action/performance.

Certainly for the Gem trout rods, the Mk1 is a little slower than the Mk 11. The Gem MK 11 trout rods I handled were not a patch on the original version - trying to hard to keep up with the Sage XP and failing...The salmon range may be different.
I had an Altmor S 14 footer, ok rod, but didn't get on with it. The latest Altmor incarnation, the 'Spey', is a much nicer rod than the S in my opinion, more designed for traditional spey casting with much nicer feel and connection with what the line is doing.

Belonging to the guys I fish with I have seen the following Hardy rods snap:
Mk1 Gem 15' Ultralite 13' Origin 15' twice and the third one started creaking!!
These chaps now use Loop and they appear, to date, to have kept to the same number of pieces they were bought with.

Never had a problem with my MK1 14' Gem or my 16' Swift. Like both rods and had several fish on both of them. They both cast a good line and so far have been very happy with them. can't compare them to Altmor as I've never fished one.

Had an Altmoor S 15' #10 and got on well with it, unfortunately it failed at the butt joint when I asked it a big question. Went on to a Loop Greyline which is still in use.
