Just back from the Spey lower wester elchies. A succesfull week. Five of us fished the week & had four fish. Three to my rod. ;D Some very nice fly water. Only dislike about the beat is the cuttlery chuckers from the Aberlour side who can fish the upper two pools. But its very nice and peacefull further down the beat. Easy wading & on most pools very little wading is needed. The conditions for the week were showing 1'7 on the gauge our side I think lower on the Aberlour side. Mixed sunny cloudy spells & a downstream wind for the start of the week. It dropped to about 1'5" towards the end of the week & was hot and sunny. The aberlour Gauge I think was as low as 1'2". My three fish were on the first two days. Had an offer early on & lost a fish on the third day on a willie gun tube. The first fish took a black & yellow tube on an intermediate line. The fish was along side my rod but flipped across it hence poor angle & big shadow on the photo. Took the pick & it went straight back & was off like a rocket. Brilliant start for the week. Again on a black & yellow tube intermediate line. This one took a Green Highlander size 6 on sink 1/2 power taper. The best fish for the week. And an underwater pick too. Have a good underwater vid too. If I can get it uplaoded I will add to this post. Good fishing & a good crack. All in all a succesfull week for me & I would like to go back. Plenty of whiskey consumed also. My speycasting did infact improve after a few single malts Cheers Graeme

Simmo, Great report and photos. Double spey off the left shoulder with a downstream wind? Any sea-licers? Did you get down to Broom Isle and fish off the rocks? Or were the Craigellachie lads hogging it from the opposite bank We are on the Craig next week, I think the fish are still running through, however some big fellows have been taken recently just downstream

Or were the Craigellachie lads hogging it from the opposite bank I'd say the simple answer to that would be yes! ;D I hope Simmo appreciates us allowing unhindered passage to the fish on Monday - Wednesday. Good luck next week, and don't forget the factor 15.

Hi Guy's, Double spey off the left shoulder with a downstream wind? That would be the snake roll off the left shoulder with a downstream wind . Got down to Broom Isle later in the week but mainly fished the upper pools where there were more fish showing earlier in the week. Plus it did look a bit busy down there Some very nice water the neck of the garden looks a very promising pool & its a delight to fish. The fish in the bottom two pics was a licer, if you look closley you can see them on the gill covers. Thanks Graeme

Looks like you had a great week Simmo and managed to evade the flying cutlery also.
Good photos too, especially the top 2 and bottom 2. The underwater photo is excellent, what type of camera do you have? I'm not too sure about the middle photo, at first glance, the heads look pretty large in comparison to the body and a bit on the thin side but most probably just a bad angle.
Well done again and a great report.

In the middle photo the fish was rather on the thin side for its length. Although it was the biggest of the three I think the best fish was the top one. Shame I was on my own & didn't get the best of pics.
The last fish for the week was a belter though, with sea lice too. Shame I did not catch it ;D I was on my way to the pool & it was almost to the bank.
The camera is an Pentax Optio W20 not so great wider angled but for those type of shots excellent & the underwater feature is a bonus. I will try & add the vid. I am not sure if flickr supports this or not.
Had an excellent time in all & with a downstream wind for most of the week my left hand up is getting better all the time.
Cheers Graeme

Thanks Graeme,
You're absolutely right, the fish in the bottom 2 photo's is a 'reel' cracker and proportionally perfect. The colours are magnificient and the underwater pic facility, a real bonus.
In my opinion there is nothing better than a quick pic before returning a fish of that quality, a fantastic addition to the fishing log. I keep my digital camera in my pocket daily for such opportunities and find that it eases the burden on those few who still find it hard to accept these mighty fish look far better in the river then in their freezer!
Hope to see you back on the Spey soon.

Well done Simmo,
Nice fish !!
We were on LWE the week before you and managed one fresh fish (not a licer) and several kelts.
We had our wives & friends up for the weekend. One of our friends' 12 year old son had his first try a salmon fishing.
After trying the Double hander, I set up a trout rod for him with a size 14 silver stoat, with the view that he might catch a trout. Would you believe it, he hooked a 5 lb kelt which he landed !! This made his day and gave him a great introducton to the sport...this is what it is all about.
Excellent report by the way

Hi Scotview,
He will be hooked for life. I bet he was delighted kelt or not. Once he learns the way's of the double hander even more so I believe.
A couple of the guy's managed the opposite, decent size trout on salmon flies. One of the Brownies was about 4lb. There was a few good hatches during the week & there were trout everywhere. I stuck with the salmon rod & flies but was very tempted to try for the brownies.
Regards Graeme

simmo what camera have you used for the underwater shot? I like the idea of these pics as they are different to the normal pose of holding up fish to the camera. I have an aquapack for my camera which I bought to keep splashes off the camera and to possibly save it from the scrap yard if I take a swim. It is supposed to allow you to take underwater pics but I'm not too sure if I trust a glorified plastic bag to keep £200 worth of camera working under water.

Hi Wilbert,
Its a Pentax Optio W20. It has video features also that work underwater.
Its an ideal fishing camera IMO. Originally bought it because I drowned a camera on a fishing trip but have now found that the underwater pics & vids are very nice indeed & add something extra to the normal fish pics.
Cheers
