caught this 10.5lbs bar of silver from the River Mourne at the weekend, it was dripping in sea lice. A nice way to christen my new Monteith and get off the mark for the season

Was on the Mourne on Saturday past - tightened into a fish early afternoon but that was it - didn't see any fish. Caught yet another rainbow - there seems to be quite a few of these in the 1/2 - 1lb range. Fished the Finn that morning for a few hours - saw one fish - water was low but fishable.
Where did you get your fish?

got it from Sion (Gravenue) on Saturday, was going to try the Finn but thought it was a bit low and went to the Mourne instead... glad I did ;D. There seems to be a few fish about but still early days - lets hope the grilse arrive before the nets go on

It will just depend on the water/weather which river(s) will fish best. For the Finn I would also bring a lighter outfit - a 12-13fter is all you would need up there cheers E

The Monteith struck scottish silver a couple of times last week too, using the fast sink and then intermediate tips as the water dropped. This one took a size 8 willie gunn cascade in the fabulous Delchapel pool on Carron, middle Spey. Shot with DSC-N2 at 2007-08-16 Shot with DSC-N2 at 2007-08-16 Shot with DSC-N2 at 2007-08-16

Out of interest, what part of Delchapel have you found to be the most productive?

In general, I wade out until I am in the middle, in line with the point of the triangle of rocks below me in the tail, Then throw a long line to the far bank. The first few casts and the last few need a big upstream mend, but the current in the middle of the fishing area is moving to the far bank anyway, and fishes ok without mending. Most of my fish have been in the top half of the fishing area- By the time your fly is in front of the dark green tree/bush low on the far bank, you have had most of your chances, but my first ever grilse took on the very sill of the rapids at the tail. You often pick up a fish almost at the dangle when your fly is a few feet to the right of the 'point ' rock of the triangle of rocks.
Cheers, Simon
