Well Chaps, I returned on Sunday from my annual trip to Gaula. I'm afraid luck was not with me on this trip. I blanked for the first time
However my fishing partner managed to winkle out 4 cracking fish on what was a rather testing week. Water levels and water temps were good for time of year....infact it was more like July than June. However we arrived to find that week 24 had seen some of the best fishing in our rotation in that week for years....possibly ever. This, we thought at the time, was great news. As it turned out it was not. Basicly week 24 had conincided with water levels dropping from a major flood on June 1st and temperatures rising to good running levels. This allowed fish to depart from the lower river in numbers and head upstream. On Gaula fish are usually held below the major falls until temps rise and water levels fall. In a normal year the fish will leave the falls pool (Gaulfossen) in small pockets thus giving a steady run of fish throughout June. Not this year.
By the start of our week (Sunday 17th) the bulk of the early June fish were through and we were waiting on fresh fish coming in. Unfortuately these fish didn't arrive until Wednesday and with the water very clear (no ideal on Gaula) fishing was hard going. Whereas in week 24 fish were coming readily to flies fished nearer the surface, on our week flies had to be fished deep to temp them.
Sink 3/4, 4/5 and 700g heads were the most successfull lines. Unfortunately I had none of these in my bag.....lesson learned!!
There's always next year
Anyway, here's a few photos of this wonderful river.
Bridge pool.
Vinsnes pool....in lowe than normal June water. Still the best pool I've ever fished!
Alan with a cracking 12.5kilo
One from Vinsnes.
Gaulfossen (gorge) in high water.
