I am off to the Tummel on wednesday next week for a days fishing been told that the beat is holding a large head of fish. What flies(sizes, patterns)and techniques should i try considering the fish will have seen every fly and spinner going and the beat has heavy fishing pressure.

Which Tummel beat are you bound for Madkeen? if you are below the dam its a bit harder to fly fish and you may be better spinning thats not to say the fly is a non starter its just harder to work out .The rest of the rivers beats will fish great to the fly.Try a floater and polytip with flies size 8 down to 14 if its low or an intermediate and 1" temple dogs if its up,Cascade,Allys,Tummel Shrimp, wee tubes and Temple dogs etc.The floating devon works well here as well as the flying C ,last time I fished the Tummel below the dam the shrimp/prawn was the method to beat but things may have changed and it may not be the method for you.If you are below the dam take care its rocky and calls for caution if the dam starts to generate the river will rise QUICKLY so watch yourself and your tackle/bags,don't be put off its a good river and you are there at the right time. This is JIMTHEFISH territory if he picks up on this he has his finger on the Tummel pulse.

Madkeen if you want to fish the fly on this beat go up to the marker post for the top of the beat below the dam, fish this pool here and its tail carefully as its a good spot you wont need to wade much on all of the beat.Next good fly bit is where the wires cross the river near that wee car pull in (PARK HERE NOT THE DAM CAR PARK).I have assumed you are on Pitlochry A.C. water and not the opposite bank (Mrs.Mohammed's bit).Above the wee car pull in the river narrows and there is a spit of rock that juts out into the river, if you are going to bait fish here is a good spot (stood at the side of a now deceased club official here while he showed me how to fish the shrimp and he got one 24lb first cast unfortunately I didn't grasp his lesson that well but it was a lesson well learnt). If you are up for it get there well early before the crowds start to gather because you will be in public scrutiny all day and will be visited by every would be expert also dress to impress coz you will be photographed/videoed all day long and pee before 9 ish coz you may not get chance again. If the dam starts to generate expect it just before 7:30-8:00 ish and possibly again in the evening if "Corrie " is on.Its a rocky beat so don't fish too fine in the cast stakes.Your best chance is to take fly/spin/bait gear and fish as conditions dictate but if you wish to fish only the fly it wont knock your chances too much, enjoy your day. Pedro.

Read last week that the tay was top spring river this year but looking at the catches on most middle tay beats they seem to be having a lean time of it.

I spent a couple of hours today fishing the West Haugh Beat of The Tummel. Water a good height but slightly stained. Never saw a fish which is most unusual at this time of year. Some good anglers were on the Beat today but noone had an offer by the time I left. There were 4 off the Beat for the week which is really poor for mid May. Checking my fishing diary I see that the first time I fished the Tummel was 20th May 1978 exactly 28 years ago. I got 2 cracking springers that day & fish were bouncing about everywhere. Some contrast today! Going back to your prospects next week, with all the rain about the river could be at a decent height which is good news for you if you are fishing the Club side. Rennie's advice looks sound -- an intermediate/sinktip depending on height with a longtailed Ally size6 or 8 depending on height. Last year the River fished well into the opening weeks of June so it could still come good for the Tummel, hopefully in your days! One warning- Rennie mentions shrimp and prawn- they were banned years ago on the Tay system so dont try them! Below the Dam can be an exciting place to be if the fish are on- I will never forget the first time I fished there which was in mid April 1992 when I got three with a cock& hen brace of 22.5 & 21.5lbs.as part of the bag. The guy I was fishing with that day also got 3 and the thing that makes me cringe now is that we killed every one. That's what everyone did in these days but thank God we have more sense now. Good luck !

I fished portnacraig on tuesday and after trying everything i managed to hook a good fish on a black/gold f13 rapala . I took the fish from the protruding rock into a slight back eddy. The fish was about 15lbs and released. There was an amazing number of fish showing when we arrived (5.30am) and some truly big fish. I dont know if any of this helps ! but i wish you all the best.
Rennie..Would it be possible for you to drop me an email regarding fishing at stormont a/c water . I was thinking about joining ( your thread helped!!) and was hoping you may be able to enlighten me on the pros and cons. Many Thanks Richard richarddavidson180@hotmail.com

Was in Pitlochry area today and looked in on the Club Water at the dam. Alex Mitchell had just landed his second when I saw him at lunchtime.. a fish of about 12lbs on a floating ruby devon. He took his first on a Willie Gunn tube fished on a fast sink tip (type 8) about 7am. He reported that there were loads of fish moving at that time. While I was standing talking to him I saw at least a dozen fish move so you should be in with a good shout. Water is a great height for the Club side. Don't neglect below the suspension bridge. A difficult wade but who dares wins !

Well thats the first outing of the season over .Water was a little on the lowside for the right bank but was good to get out seen at least 1 springer and another couple of possible clean fish.Didnt touch a thing all day but I did manage to make my IG sinker into a 45ft head when it snagged between rocks on the bottom(well thats where the fish are meant to be )Tried out my new guideline S2/3 shooting head and was surprised at how good it was for Dble speying with a 10ft poly attatched(like sh*t off the shovel).Well there's always next week at Kercock.
