could any members, please help... question is, choice of flies, for a novice fly fisher... is there a bog standard group of patterns, that you would never be with-out... i know, that the ally's shrimp is a must, have also read that the cascade is very good..... is there 6 or 8 must have flies, and in which sizes..... .....thanks lads................gavan...............

in my opinion:
willie gunns in every size imaginable (2" tubes down to #12 doubles) would suffice i'm sure.
summer you shoudn't be without a few wee silver stoats
cascade's a great fly too (although similar enough to an ally's - personally i prefer the cascade), again in all sizes imaginable
carry something big and gaudy in case of high/coloured water - something like 2" tubes (copper & aluminium) in gold, yellow & orange
also a big fan of black and yellows throughout the season in vaious sizes for clear water

Some good advice from Salar.
When I started to fly fish for salmon seriously, I caught my first salmon on a Red Allys - I probably catch over 50% of my salmon on a Red Allys - confidence is the key! It seems to be a particularly good fly in the autumn.
Munro Killer & Willie Gunns also serve me well.

Gavan - Before you spend lots of money on flies read the thread "Hooks - Trebles or Doubles" in the Tackle section. Might save you a lot of wasted cash.
