Tomorrow, I intend to flatten out all the barbs on my hooks as much as possible. At this time of year when there are kelts about, they can ,I reckon be released much faster AND in these days of catch and release it has to be the way to go. A pal of mine was fishing in Russia, no barbs allowed, party caught 164 salmon.....having lost................5. There has to be a message there. What do you guys reckon ? The intention is ALL my hooks fly included. ;D

There is a wide variation of barbs on hooks. I always like to have just a little something on them rather than none at all. In my experience of unhooking fish as long as you have a good set of unhooking pliers then that is the most responsible action.
I remember in my very early days as salmon fisherman catching a big kelt and it was freezing cold. I had no pliers of any description with me and i really struggled to get the hook out with numb hands. Not good i admit but a valuable learning lesson.
I would say keep the barbs minimal and always have good quality unhooking pliers close to hand for a quick, easy and humane method to get the hook out.
