I've just bought some from salmosalar25lb, they haven't had a swim yet but they are up to the same standard as the ones sportfish do at nearly twice the price. I think the hooks he puts on them are a bit on the big side (but then so are those Cornish winter salmon) but if you talk to him he will make them to your spec. I only ever use 10gram ones. Colours are up to you! I prefer black and silver in clear water with no sun. If there is bright sun silver seems to disappear, especially if there is any silt or algae bloom in the water. Under these conditions I prefer red and gold. In peat stained water I don't think it makes any difference what colour you use although copper can look really deadly. Talking of deadly, the flying C sometimes gets a bad press for deep hooking. Fish do take it deeply when cast downstream on occasions but when cast upstream or square deep hooking is no more common than it is with fly fishing in my experience. I cant see the point in downstream spinning anyway, you might just as well fish the fly, unless the water is really big. I've heard that flying C's are pretty good for Salmon! JAD You will still have blank days! Andy

Jad ,the original (french writing on blade)seems to spin best ,cheapos are available but need to be checked every cast for blade revolving,i find no 3 blade does most of my fishing but it probably depends on your river, we cast them up stream ,give it a jerk to start the blade spinning and retrieve at a speed just to keep from snaging and keep blade revolving ,for me they have never worked dowmstream but maybe for others they do.................Corky

Corky, The sportfish ones don't need a jerk to "jump start" them. I started out with the french ones, never again you always look suspicious when you cast in wait for the spinner to sink and then jerk the rod Andy

Hi All, thought I might add my bit, the trebles I use are VMC short shank wide gape, so although they may look bigger they are actually the normal size, 2, 4 or 6, Salmon do occasionally take C's deep but I have yet to have this happen to me, maybe it's the way I fish, cast ever so slightly upstream (also take current into consideration), slow retrieve down around with the current, usually scissors or bottom lip. As for colours well there is a vast array out there and at one time or another I have tried most of them, thing I found was, should I use this colour or that colour? and ended up not confident in what I was using, so decided to concentrate on the main colours, Black was most consistent, then Red, followed by Natural, but have had a lot of demand for Yellow this year, so am currently having Yellow tube made. As Andy said earlier, give me your spec and I can make it. Sounds like he is planning to come down after our winter Salmon in which case he will need hooks that won't straighten . John

Try FishingPool.co.uk, just confuse you they have 5 weights and about 15 colours and now much better rubber, no splitting! Oh and 2 Fly Rod C's, top quality components. I think they sell through John Norris as well. Buy in bulk always cheaper. I found the cheap FC's didn't work too well. Most used weights 15 and 19g and colours, Red, Black and Yellow, occasional Orange and Purple. The 'original' Flying C, or so I was told was called a Quimpernelle originally from Quimper in NW France.

hi folks
does anybody know who and when the "original" flying c was put on the market, as i know my dad made one about 25 years ago from an old bit rubber tube and a mepp, and it caught fish believe me, i can remember him catching a fish, and a visiting angler netted it for him (i was a bit young) and commented on the lure, then soon after this these flying c lures made an appearance, just a thought....
cheers scott.

I believe Hardy sold them in the 1930's so they may even pre-date this.
As for colour - any colour as long as it is black. However there is a secret to be added that is a great enhancement- my busines's previous owner used it and when I stumbled across it he then spilled all- but it is a secret.
