My present rod is a 10 ft hardy fibralite, which I won at the tender age of 13.
Of course I love it...... but now that the old back is beginning to give me some gip, I am beginning to consider a lighter (and newer) option.
I would use it for the Tyne and Tweed, and I reckon about 10 ft is right.
If the next rod gives me another happy 20 years fishing, I don't mind spending a bit on the rod....
So,,, any suggestions please?
Thanks in advance,
F

Greys made the Mac Martin rods, but I'm not sure if they are part of their current range.
They were being sold off cheap on ebay about 12 months ago.

Just be aware Fenton, damn good rods the Mac Martin range but the handle doesn't suit every body its a fixed reel seat but well down the handle.Have you thought of a fibretube blank made up to your spec.? rings and handle to suit your reel choice etc.,maybe even make it up yourself. Pedro.

I have a Greys Greyflex MK I, Hardy Perfection, B&W Multispin. The Greys is the best one - casts beautifully and handles most lures.
I also have an 8" Greys' Missionary spin which is terrific from June - August for lighter lures when seeking grilse and sea-trout.

I have a Greys Greyflex 10ft and I wouldn't swap it for the world. Very light to handle, but yet can handle any large or small salmon or sea trout. I did need to have a new end section on it, but that I believe was my fault and not the rod. It was replaced free of any charge apart from the 1st class stamp put on the envelope to send the broken section back to Greys, who sent then replacement within two days.

There are loads of makes out there but for range and performance you will not beat a Shimano.
You can pay anything from £20 to £400 so plenty to choose from.
One little point. The fibatube rod you had would have taken some stick - modern carbon rods need to be bent into slowly - so if stuck on the bottom best to wrap the line round your clothed arm and pull, do not use the rod.

Some excellent advice all round- thanks.
I had a look at a Greys greyflex today, and it seemed a nice rod. I borrowed a shimano travel spinning rod last year and was also impressed with that.
I should really take a closer look at the shimanos,
thanks again F

I've also got the Greys greyflex 9ft and its a nice rod but wished I'd have bought the 10ft model instead. I also used to own a Hardy fibralight spinning rod many years ago and now wished I hadn't sold it
