I have just bought some Berkley Fireline and was staggered that such a fine diameter line (0.16 mm) could have a breaking strain of 8.5 kg (18.7 lb). When I tested it I found it broke at 8.5 lb, not quite as impressive! Does anyone else have experience of this? I can only assume the americans havn't grasped what a kilogramme is, though not quite as critical as N.A.S.A's expensive mistake with metric linear measurements!

I've been using it for around 10 years and , apart from one unexplainable breakage , have never had any probs.

Never had a problem. I've used 14lb and lately 30lb (it's so thin you might as well have the heavy stuff) and always found it nearly indestructible. I've also used 30lb Berkley Whiplash (ooh err) which has a diameter of 0.1mm according to the info on the spool. I think it may be a bit thicker than stated but I've not had a problem with this either.
Duff knot? Bad batch?

The consensus of opinion seems to be that it is good stuff, my knot wasn't giving so that leaves bad batch.. Glad I tested it!
