You dont need to boil them, to dye them use food colorant available from shops, once dyed remove any excess liquid, place in a container and add rock salt. Ps you dont need to dye them either they work just as well in their natural state also the fresher you can get them the better the results

For fresh shrimp or prawns (not pre boiled)! Put the dylon dye in water, quantity depends on size of pan but you can start with 1/2 a pot, ensure it is boiling. Put prawns in a chip pan basket, not to many at once or the temperature will drop below boiling point for too long, for 2 ½ to 3 inch shrimp/prawns take out after seven minutes (not six and not eight minutes!). Leave to air cool, do not use cold water to cool them or they will become fragile. Once cool, salt is most commonly used to preserve them and help keep out bacteria.

Very poor advice RP. Now I can see that you're not an experienced prawn fisher anyway. The body of knowledge of prawn preparation and fishing resides firmly in N. Ireland and Ireland.

Dear minitube
Instead of making an un-constructive comment, why not explain why you view my advice as poor. You can of course boil them for other lengths of time, even for differing sizes of shrimp/prawn, or not boil them at all! But there are consequence to doing each.

Personally I don't dye my prawns or shrimp anymore, though I probably would if there were too many spots on the brown shrimp. I usually preserve mine in salt for convenience, didn't like the formalin treatment/smell from a personal point of view, and find Glycerine too sticky. Getting prawns or shrimp that have not been already boiled on the boats can be a problem in certain areas, often the fishermen lie and tell you they haven't been boiled! Fortunately I know someone at Peterhead. I've heard of a guy in Wales who had so much trouble getting suitable shrimps that he twice per year he drives all the way to Billingsgate Market in London.
Sometimes I boil mine, but it largely depends on how long it will be before I actually use them and how I'm going to fish them.

I have used Dylon as well, have heard of using red ink but it sounds expensive and can just imagine getting ink stains everywhere. I just buy them now and have tried natural brown, red and purple. I don't have the fishing to really find out which is best but tend to use red & purple in the autumn and natural brown in the summer.
I'm not surprised shrimping isn't as popular as it used to be, the price of shrimps is silly.

Yeah add tikka sauce and rice for a cracking prawn curry. ;D ;D
No serious I know people who use indian food colouring, but I like to use the prawn in a natural colour.

Before the shrimp and prawn ban here, i would fish the prawn only when the water was high, and the shrimp usually when the water was low. Never understood why it was banned as it was no better than for example the worm. Never had a fish gut hooked on shrimp/prawn. all were in the scissors or mouth area, Ahh the good old days
