With most rivers opening next Wednesday it will be interesting to hear a few reports from those anglers fortunate enough to be able to fish this day. I'll be out on the Tyne fishing just below Bywell, probably as good a bet as anywhere in England to get a springer on opening day?
Will report back afterwards, but it is looking like levels will be favorable given the cold settled spell we are getting at present. Not confident of a springer, but kelts are likely.
Is anyone else out on Wednesday???

Well, the 1st has finally arrived and just about gone. I arrived down the main Tyne at about 11.00am to be greeted with 7 canoe/kayak fools in the middle of our beat spashing their ores over some prime water. Some might say this would not be a problem, but the best lies are over shallow water and they were creating quite a disturbance. Not the best start to the season. Anyhow, a phone call to the beat ownerl ater and we managed to go them shifted.
Nevertheless i still managed a couple of pleasant, yet chilly, hours fishing. I hooked one kelt which did not stay on for too long. On driving back i stopped off at Wylam to see Graham Heaney (see T&S this month) whom had a 12lb fish at 930 this morning, which will most likely be the first of the new season on the Tyne. Up to lunch time Bywell were seemingly blank, although fresh run fish were in evidence.

Yes oars, sorry. Must be quite rare for grue to prevent fishing on opening day? Video clip that GR attached is quite amuzing, looks like he was fishing a muddler on top of the ice...

Temperature must have hovered just above grue level but the ice in the margins stuck all day. It was bloody cold in that water!! No 2006 models reported, had hold of 3 fish on Gold Willie Gunn bottle tube fished on slow sink Loop Quattro tip. Lost first 2 fish but landed the 3rd after an excellent fight. Was the best kelt ever, had hardly lost any condition, or scales, no ragged fins or distended vent just a slight hollowing of the rear belly in the net, she must have been in, spawned and on the way back in a week or two such was the condition, she swam off strongly when returned. Good to hear the check on the reel sing again on the take!! Rumours of fish still spawning in Hexham area.

Had about a foot of extra water in Dave (0.1m), quite low for the time of year.
Sounds like a pleasant opening day tynespeycaster, especially when you get a bend in the rod. The kelts i saw were acting very strangely, splashing about on the surface repeatedly and most had fungus on them probably due to the cold snap we are experiencing of late.
What is that white fungal growth more accurately known as anyone? Is it anything to be concerned about, i've seen it on Tweed fish in the spring quite a lot too...

does greame heany still use a tube fly mounted on a size 6 treble fished on a spinning rod and fixed spool reel? or has he changed to something else? he seems to be extremely good at useing the tube fly method if yer want to call it that, infact ive never seen anyone in the uk use a method like that, only with standard fly gear of course, never a spinning rod yer don't need a weatherman to see which way the wind blows
