The new angling newspaper the Angling Star has a front page feature this week on a "salmon" caught from the River Ure. Even a cursory look at the photo would indicate that this is not a salmon but almost certainly a large brownie.

Sewin, not seen that photo so cant comment, but both Salmon and Sea Trout run the Ure and now is the best time they arnt often caught as most of the Ure cant be called a Game fishing river but they are often encountered at the weir at Borough Bridge ,the weir at Newby Hall (where they are often seen in numbers) and then in the by now more favorable waters upstream of Ripon. In fact the late Arthur Oglesby mentioned in one of his articles when giving a casting lesson on the river near Masham he hooked a fish of 19lb ish. Pedro.

Hooked a Ure Salmon yesterday whilst Trout fishing at Kilgram Bridge, approx 5 miles above Masham. After a lot of thrashing around and a long run downstream my 3lb leader finally parted company. Fish must have been 8 or 9lb. Dont know how it will survive because the water is very warm and low.

Salmon come out the Ure every year without fail, few and far between yes but they still come out,the chap who owns the tackle shop at Borobridge has had one or two from below the weir at Borobridge, and the game keepers who used to work for Bolton estates at Preston under-scar get their share one way another, ive heard of fish being caught from East Whitton area near where the little stream runs in,and that little bridge near Middleham i think, just down the road from Leyburn,oh and Newby hall and of course West Tanfeild-give it time it will only get better as the Humber esturey gets cleaner and of course the lower Ouse
