hi , my advice would be to ignore the hype about the tamar being the premier salmon and seatrout and maybe think about the fowey or camel , spring salmon are a bit of a rarity on both , but big seatrout abound , the taw is a good option for a salmon , find a local tackle shop and get advice on local club water , they tend to offer day tickets , another good option down there is fishing off the headlands for the bass and pollack on fly , cornish salmon season runs till mid december reflecting the fact that the salmon tend to come in from july onwards , with a very good run in november , saying that , there are always a few about . In all tackle shops down there you will find a small book " fishing southwest " , this lists all fishing in cornwall , welll worth buying good lock nick

For trout fishing some of the tiny west Cornwall streams are available through angling 2000 www.angling2000.org.uk/ As Nick said your best bet is probably the Camel or Fowey but the Lynher can also be good for early sea trout, but that is nearly back to Plymouth so not really within an hour of Hayle. If you go out with a fly rod by day on these Cornish rivers the locals will give you funny looks. All the best Andy

Hi all Im one of those locals that "give you funny looks" , I think the main reason for lack of Salmon fly fishing is that The Camel has a lot of tree cover, and where you can use a fly rod Salmon don't lie there, however thats not to say people don't catch Salmon on the fly as they do. At the moment the Camel & Fowey are very low and not a lot happening, although a bit more than an hours drive the Tamer or Lyner is probably your best bet.
