A positive picture. Are the Sea Trout being restocked or is it just Salmon?

It is only salmon that are re-stocked. There has always been plenty of sea trout in the river. Very noticable when they do the electro fishing, and from catch returns.

Last year was a bit poor for sea trout though compared to the three seasons before, well for me anyway. I'm in the process of booking a few days on Egton Estates as we speak.

Like most rivers the Esk certainly needs some water. A good flood would be the order of the day to clean it out and bring the fish in.

A sea trout weighing approx 2lb was caught on the rising water on the EFA water. Looks like the fish have started to move in from the harbour at long last with this water.

The nets off Whitby were doing well last week (I wonder if the fish sense the high pressure coming?) and there are now fish throught the system, certainly beyond lealholm. A youngish lad caught a fish lower down yesterday. I asked his friend how big it was, and his hands began about four feet apart, before whitling down to about 18 inches (classic!)
I'm inspired now, and off for a cast! F

This bit of water will have certainly got them excited, and once they are on the move they will motor on through to the higher parts of the river. The net men are certainly doing fine, and with the price at approx £11 per kilo, it's well worth catching a box or two.

The first salmon of the season was caught earlier on this week, with another salmon being caught a couple of days later. Sea trout also been reported, and at least one of the sea trout caught on the fly. All good news for the Esk.

Anyone who fishes the free stretches on the Esk will know the river level marker on Glaisdale beck at Beggars Bridge, and just to say that the beck was running at approx 4ft at 3pm today, which means that the main river is running a good 2-3 ft higher than the beck.

Thanks to Yorkshire esk for taking me out for a couple of hours last night. The water was a bit big and heavy, but we certainly saw a few fish even if we didn't bump any!
It was good to put another face to another name from this forum, the craic flowed freely and a s always I learnt another few wee tips.
Tight lines for today Y-Esk, and I hope we can bump into each other again soon!
Cheers F

We had a nice evening of chatting and fishing, midges in their thousands. Fish jumping and swimming through quite steady. Until the torpedo came through, we never saw the fish just the waves and I mean waves, it wasn't going to stop for anything. It came up through rapids into slackish water and kept on travelling, I have never seen anything quite like what we saw last night.

The Esk was kind to me today, a 3.5 pounder from a wee private beat. My first of the season, (from the esk) and my first on my new 6.5 ft greys spinning rod.
happy happy days!

Well done Fenton, bet that was fun. I too have taken to using a little spin rod, mine is 7'. With 12lb braid and a 6g spinner it casts a treat, has landed fish to 12lb too without undue problems.
