hello Reeco
That will be very helpful for me. This will be my 1st season of fishing for Salmon on the Tywi, so any help will be great. What flies would you recommend?
thanks wadef

hi wadef
i fish the tywi quite a lot, although primarily for sewin. fly wise its pretty similar to anywhere else. little silver stoats for dawn and dusk on low & clear water to big gaudy tubes on sinking lines for coloured water and everything in between. pot bellied pigs seem to be making an impact. whilst occassional salmon are encountered from april through till october, it generally not until the first couple of floods in september that many salmon make it past Nantgaredig. obviously these floods don't always happen in september, and therefore the salmon won't run in any decent numbers. in fact, the main run of salmon seems to occur once the season is over. i know a chap who caught 3 20 pound plus fresh run salmon on the fly when collecting broodstock in november; everyone else was spinning and didn't catch. tywi anglers seem to like a good bit of colour in the river for good flyfishing conditions - anything from 6" of visibility on a decent flow should be about right.
i believe that Reeco meant that from April 1st to 16th June its catch and release for salmon, rather than the season doesn't start until 16th june.

I fished the river this weekend for the first time and caught a huge sea trout of 10lbs 12oz which smashed my old sea trout PB. Happy as a pig in sh1t.

I dont know what the pattern was called but it was a salmon pattern rather than a sea trout one. Now that I have the posting of photos sussed I will try and take a close up pic of the fly and post that too.

Here are 2 pics of the fly that the fish was caught on, anyone that knows the pattern please speak up. It was a good fight and the reel was singing a merry song as the fish tried to get into some snags on both banks. I was crapping it that the point fly would get snagged up which has happened to me before.

Well done Wilbert, a great fish to catch.
Or alternatively - you jammy beggar, I've been trying to catch one that big for years, at night as well! ;D
As for the fly, I don't know except it might be described as a silver Willie Gunn?
