Llandogo is the nicest bit of fly water on the whole beat, in my view. Last July I was wading just level with where that photo is taken and a big dog otter swam past me.

Cracking place Bigsweir. Unfortunately no fish in the river, but well worth the effort. For the record I fished Wyeseal at the top of the water and Llandogo at the bottom end. Llandogo had fly water more reminiscent of a slightly smaller Dee- lovely!Recommended. The problem with Bigsweir is that if there's any water at all coming down the fish go straight through and the first stop is somewhere just short of Redbrook, then next stop Wyesham or the Duke's. It's not that there's no fish in the river, it's that they're just not stopping at the top of the tide. Bigsweir needs the river at no higher than normal summer level to stop fish but if the river is at that level or better still, a little below, then the fish will stop and it can be very good fishing.

So where are all these fish getting caught that have sped past Bigsweir? Everyone I spoke to said they where eagerly awaited.

From what I gather from the websites, (rwga and W&UF) the river is at lower than summer levels, so Bigsweir should be packed, so why is there only a handful being caught

Hopefully some rain and a shoal or 3 of fish might come up

The webcam discused above is working now and even has some water registering today. www.wyeuskfoundation.org/conditions/waterheights.phpIn recent years the main Wye run has not come into the river until mid May so I would not have expected the lower reaches to be catching large numbers, even in late April. However, the situation should be changing now with the 12 lb late spring/early summer run putting in an appearance. This water will help, although we'll need it to keep raining for a while to redeem the drought conditions of the last six weeks. Mark

Anyone see that programme on the Wye on BBC 2 tonight? Fantastic portrait of a wonderful place.

I watched it and thought the same. I had a good laugh at the cider boy's QA control system. ;D
The ghillie seemed a decent bloke and the water he covered also looked decent.
Nice looking part of the world.

Are you referring to Glanwye? I saw elsewhere that they had 5 fish in one day. Do tell more.

Hi ar,
yes, this was at Glanwye.
All taken at steady intervals during the day. It's the first time I've fished a sink tip and copper tube in July for several years...long may it continue.
Conditions even better today, with more than competent anglers present, and blank...that's fishing!!

The Wye and Usk Foundation reported 72 salmon for last week which must be something of a record for one week on the upper and middle river in recent years .

Happy days again - looks like all the hard work done to improve the habitat is starting to pay off, or is it the removal of the Irish nets?
