It would be nice to think so, Elwyman, but before we get ahead of ourselves, let's wait until the end-of-season totals. I suspect that recent catches have had more to do with unprecedented water levels than anything else.

Hi ar,
I am with you on that one, but I hope we're wrong.
However, 2002 was a real low point, and my friends at WUF are pleasantly encouraged by what they are witnessing.
And there is nothing better to increase morale than a few fish caught...it gives room for belief that somethings working.

All bars were shut when we finally arrived back in London best part of 4 hours via M50 M6 M1. Not much of a grin left by then Need to find a better fly beat fishing 200ish yards of water gets a bit tedious. either that or get someone to row me down the beat!!!! a la Tweed ;D

Hi ar, However, 2002 was a real low point, and my friends at WUF are pleasantly encouraged by what they are witnessing. I think that the 378 fish (provisional) recorded in 2006 was the low point - having thought we couldn't go any lower than 2001 we did. The only way is up!

W&S Just been reading, happily, reports on Wye fishing on this thread. The Wye is my most local "serious" Salmon river. The reports from T&S make it sound as if the river is not worth a cast, however I'm beginning to wonder if this is so. I've met several folk of late who describe a positive picture, quite a few truly "red letter" days in all parts of the river being reported. Who am I to believe? Is it just the big waters? Is the Wye dying, or thriving? I'd love to fish a local river but am constantly deterred by what T&S reports.

Geoff Franks writes the T&S reports. If you want to read more from him and get a picture of his outlook, try www.RWGA.co.uk (which he writes) and you'll get the picture. I am not sayng he is completely wrong but to him a glass is always half empty.

390 fish for the entire river up to 21.8.07. Maybe better than 2006 (a serious low point), but not much M

Stoater, well worth giving it a serious look ,there are fish to be had ,not as many as it should have but for a local river which it sounds like it is a few days on some of the ghillied beats and talk to the ghillies you should start getting the "get down tomorrow phone calls "
I had a good day yestrday on some nice fly water ,That was the Carrots beat ,thanks Rob ,boy enjoyed his day ,Bill the ghillie got him doing a half decent single spey in recoerd time (his double has not been a problem ).had there been a fish or two about with Bills guidance I am sure we could have caught ! Mick and Mark who were down at Holmes Lacey saw a couple of fish ,so there are some about . Geoff Franks is right about some things the river could really do with a decade of stocking with Wye strain fish to Kick start a revival !
Some more money going into the fisheries would help .
Sad to see on some of the beats a lack of maintainance ,even down to Marking acess points .

www.rwga.co.uk/index.php?doc=chosennews&id=70this from the river wye ghillies site makes interesting if depressing reading . Yes his glass is half empty ,but he does to me talk some sense . talking to a lower Wye proprieter yesterday ,he says he is going to do his own hatchery <I say more power to his elbow !!
