I fished the Usk on opening day March 3rd.
I know we're restricted by 16th June etc but any fish would have gone back anyway. I find the digi camera provides better memories than chunks of fish lying in a freezer.
Anyway, it turned out to be a day of casting practise because the River came up 2 metres overnight.
Another week on and I've once again been invited to fish. The River seems to be in fine fettle and has cleared. I'll let you know how I get on!
Are there any other Usk anglers out there?

Whereabouts do you fish the Usk? It's a lovely river with some good day ticket availability. I had always pidgeonholed it as a later river, with the Wye offering a better chance of a Spring fish. Have I got it wrong?

Have I got it wrong? Yes you had it wrong, the Usk used to open on 26th Jan which was as early as the Wye and there are fresh fish in the system well before the current opening day of 3rd March. In March 2004 the Wye recorded 12 fish against the Usk's 19 and in March 2005 the Wye had 28 against the Usk's 16. So you can see that the Usk is right up there as an early river however whilst the Wye has more than half its annual catch on the bank before June is out the main month on the Usk like so many others is October. There has been one fresh fish from both rivers so far this season both well up the respective rivers. A 12lber from Glanwye on the Wye and a slightly smaller 11lber from Upper Monkswood on the Usk.

I'm not as knowledgeable about the River as sewin, but can confirm that there have been fresh fish seen and caught on the lower stretches. I mainly fish the Gwent Angling Society's water above Abergavenny. They are very dynamic and progressive in their outlook, running fly tying classes, rod building courses and during the summer months, fly casting coaching sessions. Have a look at their website at: www.gwentanglingsociety.org
