I've had sea-trout in the Clyde estuary with a fly rod. Standard patterns and imitations of shrimps, ragworms and small fish.
Where have you tried in the Tay estuary? I'm up that way a bit and wouldn't mind giving it a try, if not fishing the Tay itself.

i worked over in Wormit in Fife (south bank of the Tay ...almost opposite Dundee.) about eight years ago for a Summer and there were quite a few people who fished for Sea Trout in the Tay estuary around Newport and Wormit and further upstream for SeaTrout, with some reasonable success!I think most used Spinners, and a few even used bait casters!! I dont think they'd have put up much of a fight with one of them! and a few managed fish to the fly.
Im not sure if you have ever tried these parts? but maybe worth a shot? just take it easy though as some of the tides are quick, and some of the flats are soft! One on the North side is called "sure as death bank", so im assuming it has a history!!

hi fruin and johnmac. the south bank of the tay is where i have fished, but you can get seatrout at the broughty ferry area and have also seen salmon moving through between the boats at the marina, i seem to get more fish on a fast moving tide?[seatrout that is] the salmon are not interested.

Thanks Kelliefly.
My in laws stay in Monifeith, so Broughty Ferry is a likely spot.
