Hello guys
I'm going to fish a river that as some salmon, but want to fish at dawn (to much crowd during the day), what flies and colors are better for this situation.

The time of day should not really change your fly choice too much. However, if i am fishing into darkness then i will often put something on with slightly more presence i.e a little bit bigger.
Dawn fishing has certainly proved fruitful for myself and friends in the summer months. Not so critical earlier or later in the season.

At this time of the year the first person down the pool can often 'rob the nest' - getting to your beat at dawn is, to a large extent, more significant than fly choice. I was first down the stream on my beat Sunday morning past and got a fresh grilse of 4lb on my third cast, this in spite of the fact that, as yet, there are few fish about.

Couldn't agree more with Beanieboy. The early bird catches the....ummmm....fish. I had a nice one of about 7 pounds on Tuesday morning at 06.00, just having got to the pool before the chap on the other bank did.

Fish a private beat with double bank and you can start after 9.30 having met a 9 for a nice chat and cup of coffee. Dawn is for the birds

Why would you want to start so late (9.30) if you had paid top money to fish a private beat? I don't mind fishing without a ghillie and wouldn't expect him to be there any earlier than 8.30 but I don't like to be told I cant fish before or after a certain time. This doesn't happen very often but when I have worked nights and weekends to pay for a fishing trip I want to fish when I want. Early morning fishing should not just be for association water and should not be frowned upon by the lazy buggers that cant get out of bed in a morning / afternoon.

I fished Tilbouries on the Dee for two seasons and never caught a fish after 8.00 am. Mainly in sunny summer weather.

Dont often hit the water that early but my diary reminds me of waking in pitch dark one early april monday ,weird waking early had done the long drive from London to Gledfeild on the Carron . Slipped into the bridge pool started swiging a team of two silk cuts on a old fashioned sink tip in the sort of light I would consider starting seaatrouting . Just under the bridge and the only fish of the week is on

Thanks for the help!!
I must say I'm from Portugal and the reason I want to go early to de river is because after the 8:00 am in this beat, that is the second stop of salmon in river Minho, the boats start to get around and I don't like to fish with they're presence.
Plus this river as not private waters.
Someone said me that flies with some blue on it could work better at dawn.

Done my praying later - the fact that I caught my fish so quickly surely means the 'big man' was giving me the benefit of the doubt! Not much good Willie when the forecast gives cloud cover for early morning and strong sunshine thereafter! Fish a private beat with double bank and you can start after 9.30 having met a 9 for a nice chat and cup of coffee. Dawn is for the birds

Or for people who go to bed early and don't consume vast amounts of red every night! Have you managed to see them early morning squirrels yet ?

Wouldn't want to fish any other way, first light is a great time to be about caught probably 40% of my fish in the first couple of hours after daylight, first one into the pool especially Monday morn. rather have that than the last hour, leave that for the bed heads and for years always fished with a thick head (no change there then) for the first couple of hours, recommended procedure really as in the early days it helps with the jitters when you hook a fish!. Rennie,I just cannot see you being made welcome on any beat if you were demanding to fish whenever you want to start in the morning. reasons..............1 There is a health and safety serious risk.Neither ghillies or owners want anyone wandering round the river doing as they wish,in the event of an accident ie drowning, You wouldnt begin to understand how that affects the people responsible for the beat, or you would'nt ask the question. 2 Would you be happy to go and fish a private beat knowing someone had been anywhere he fancied before you got there,I doubt it.. It would,in my opinion,be a case of one happy "punter" and five seriously pissed off punters,no contest my man. Even if you paid for all six rods and fished alone,it would'nt be right to allow anyone to fish without a ghillie around. Generally ghillies are paid from 9 to 5, beats are generally let from 9 to 5 and that can be varied at the discretion of the ghillie In my case I will allow someone to fish early, provided all the other rods agree to that,if anyone in the party objects to it,there is no early fishing.period . Think what you like ,but we ghillies have a resposiblity far beyond anything you would understand,it seems. Malcolm hit the nail right on the head. If you don't want a ghillie, fish club water.

Why would you want to start so late (9.30) if you had paid top money to fish a private beat? . There is more to fishing than catching fish, if my hosts wish me to start at 9.30 after meeting for coffee at 9, have a 2 hour lunch and a 2 hour dinner, I'm happy. There are still plenty of fish to catch.

This maybe ok for those with plenty of time / money on their hands but when I have busted a gut doing loads of overtime at very unsociable hours just to pay for a few days fishing then i will fish pretty hard. I wish that the rivers that I fish had good runs of fish all year round but they dont so I have to make best of what I do have. Fishing is an addiction and I need a big fix just to get by others it appears don't.
