Apparently the boats spend a lot of time fishing worms, so the bank is the place to be! I would hazard a guess that the fly water is of top quality - like all the Tay generally is.

Had a day on this beat yesterday.Water was up about 6' and not really suitable for the fly but stuck at it to no avail.Saw a fish swirl at the fly but it didn't take.Ten minutes later helped a guy who was spinning about 40 yds upsteam net a fish of around 8 to 9lbs.I was so pleased for him !!

Aye, I'll bet you were ;D
Have you been down the Endrick this year Iain? Somebody got 7 salmon and two sea trout on Wednesday, before the water came up again and coloured up.

Iain,
With the Endrick and, even more so, the Fruin, it's a case of getting the right time to be on the water. If you fish them when the water is not right, your chances are greatly reduced. If you get there when the water is falling and between 1ft and 3ft, it's hard to go wrong. If you fish all day, fish will pass you, and they will take the fly. Best times - third spate in July(if there are spates in July), if not any spates in August, September, and October. Most fish are coloured after Septemer, but bright fish will still be about. It's not as exciting as hooking fish on a bigger river, but it is still enjoyable if you get in among a run of fish. For me the Fruin is the better river, as you can get large sections of it to yourself, but more fish run the Endrick. Flies - size 10 and 12 - Ally's Shrimp, Bann Shrimp, Kylie, Kylie Shrimp, Curry's Red, Stoats Tail variants. In low water, size 16 trebles and doubles stoat's and trout flies - greenwell's, butchers.
It's rare that I get the chance to fish them nowadays, as I wouldn't bother unless the conditions are right (would rather be on the Leven).
Cheers, Gary
