Was back up at Dunkeld (Bank) today.Still nothing! All down to the last day on Kercock next Saturday....Anyway, fishing down a pool today and two fish show within about 10 mins of each other.Maddening thing is tho' they both show about 10 yds back upstream in water that I've just fished.Now... no-one is behind me so what do you do in these circumstances? Do you carry on down the pool cursing to yourself..or do you sneak out and retreat back upriver 30 yds and try and target that particular fish?Must admit,I tried both to no avail!! Answers most welcome!
Cheers

Don't think I've got the experience yet to tell the difference between a resident fish and a running one.It was certainly encouraging to at least see fish!

Iain, I would instantly move back to the top of the pool, because if they were fresh fish, they would be prone to take as soon as they see your fly. However, if they were residents, they probably just popped out the water so that you could see them laughing - ***tards, aren't they?!!! If you're spending big bucks on back end fishing, please try the Kylie shrimp or tube flies. I've had really good results with them on poor mans water during October, and have often wondered how they would work on a gentlemans beat. The aggressive male fish try to rip your arm off with these flies on. If you want some to try on Kercock, send me a pm, free of charge if you can pick them up

Graham, Glad to hear it. Personally, I've yet to find a better autumn pattern. If you ever want a few of the variants on tubes to try, give me a shout(pm). I would be happy to supply a few, free of charge, in the name of research (i.e. you'll swim them through better populated water than I usually manage) If you are tying the dressed hook arctics, they seem to look and work better with arctic fox for the wing on top of the shank and beard style hackles on the underside of the shank.

Bollix or not contribute openly; express yourself freely, but dont undermine a forum we all enjoy. If you are not up for open thoughtful debate, go F yourself.

I would change fly( colour ,size )and perhaps line or polyleader and immediately come down the pool again. This would hopefully present the fly to the fish at the right depth ,speed etc .I often wonder if my fly is simply going over the heads or underneath fish that are lying in pools. Its frustrating when you know that there are fish in a pool but cant seem to get them to take anything, but are they seeing it ? that is the question.

At the back end on the Deveron I am a great believer in getting down to the fish. However No matter what you do it will be up to the fish to be in the mood. Went out this afternoon and started at 3.45pm on the first pool took a brown trout and rose a salmon on pulling in to cast, second pool a sea-trout of about 3lb , third pool , sea-trout 1.5 lb ,Salmon about 10 lb and another sea-trout about 2.5 lb. Fourth pool pulled four then hooked and lost a fish into double figures - it was on the end as I pulled a bit of line in-- never felt a thing and then landed a grilse of about 6 lb. All on a black and yellow loop tube and Intermediate line-- and oh -- never saw a fish move in my 3 hours.-- next day they will be everywhere and you never get a touch.
Great is it not !! what will we all do in the close season??

Kylies.... I've tried the following variants based on and inspired by the Kylie shrimp. I'm convinced it is not the pattern, but the colour scheme that works with these flies. The Kylie Shrimp I tie is basically the same as the original but with arctic fox: Tag - flat silver tinsel Tail - orange buchtail, strands of orange twinkle, and golden pheasant rump feather tied over Butt - Black Floss Rear body - Copper tinsel with silver or copper wire rib Mid Wing - orange hackle fibres underside and orange arctic fox on top of hook Body front half - black floss Head Wing - orange hackle fibres underside and orange arctic fox on top of hook, with blue guinea fowl over. Cheeks - Jungle cock Head - red varnish or red thread(depending on preference) I like a simple tube fly tied as... Body - Copper tinsel with wire rib Wing - mixed black and orange bucktail with blue guinea fowl over Cheeks - Jungle cock Use black neoprene to secure the hook (I've taken more fish on this than the original) A simple temple dog version tied on shumakov skittle tubes- Wing - Brown Arctic fox, over orange arctic fox, over copper and pearl flashbou mirage, over orange arctic fox, over orange twinkle. Hackle - Hot orange, with Blue Guinea fowl over Cheeks - Jungle cock A more complicated tube- A more complicated tube dressing is - Tag - flat silver tinsel Tail Hackle - Orange Rear body - Copper tinsel with copper wire rib Mid Hackle - Orange Body front half - black floss with copper wire rib Head Wing - orange and black bucktail mixed and tied all around with blue guinea fowl over. Cheeks - Jungle cock Head - red varnish or red thread(depending on preference) Use a black neoprene hook sleeve All these patterns have worked well for me through september and october. Anybody that thinks this is bollix, does not have to use any of the above patterns
