I can get a good deal on an Ian Gordon fastspey 14ftr #9/10 and need some help with matching a line/s to this .All of my fishing is on small/med rivers and maybe max 30 sessions in the season 2-6hrs a go.Should I go for a multitip loop quattro or midspey or maybe Ian gordon /22m lines for this rod ?.Im not a very good caster so should I be looking for a short 55-60ft head and will this be a 9 or 10.It states on the rod that its best suited to a 46 grams head . I wont get the chance to try out lines so would appreciate any assistance , Corky

Good advice from Graham above, and although I can't compare with Graham's suggestions, I would say I use a Hardy Mach I, (now replaced by the Mach II), with a 13'4" Hardy Elite, #9 - 10.
The Hardy line I find, is superb, and being a shorter head sooting line may well suit the IG 14 ftr #9-10 and the size of rivers you fish too. Worth a thought.

I now mainly use the Delta Spey multi-tip (not the long one, which I just couldnt get along with) in place of the quatro tip and I personally think that the Airflo line is better than the quatro tip. Loop Quattro Tips line available from Stephen J Fawcett's store. I have one each for my 13' B&W Powerlite and Sage 15' rods - they are good solid lines. They have short-heads which suits me where I fish - Dee, Don, & N Esk

Fair point Steve but I am improving and my thinking at the moment is do I buy another rod to practice with or buy the IG and a compatable line/s ,it recieves good reviews seems to be well up for the job and in a few weeks I should be man enough for it ;D .I might get it all wrong but at the moment I dont have a stick to play with.Shame on you Steve for doubting me ;D

Corky, I use a B&W Norway 9/10 on medium rivers in N Wales. Lovely rod and easier to cast with than fast action rods. £265 from Purely flyfishing: www.purelyflyfishing.com/bwn.htmRod is rated#9, works well with a 9/10 IG or 9/10/11 Windcutter.

it its smaller type rivers you fish; then in order’ to get the rod loaded for short; to medium type cast . Then you could try a weight forward 10 line. I use a Cortland 333ht WF8floater with a Daiwa Exceler 11"3 #6/8; and find I can cover most medium, to small rivers, Spey casting with this setup using small flies’ from size 6 up wards. Loading the fast Spey rod; on small to medium rivers’ with overgrown banks’ would require a lot of line out with a double tapered line. You will have a much shorter loop with a weight forward and can shoot quite a lot of line with this setup. Hopes this helps

Hi Bandon ,as in the rivers I fish .Mostly the Lee,laune Bandon (maybe we have met). I do have 11ft3 #6/8rods that I use on the loughs ,I never thought of specifically using them for salmon even though I did have a couple on Corrib down the years. What I was looking for was recommends ( and i thank everyone for the replies ) for a spey line 55-60ish head to use on the IG fastspey 14 #9/10. Cheers Corky
