Just fished the opposite bank Ross. It starts just above the Island in the middle of the Crathes beat and comprises all of the streamy water down past the island and into the pool directly opposite the Crathes hut.
We had 2 or 3 fish from the here and watched one of the knappach rods catch a fish so the bit they have is fairly productive. Its just a short bit so its a case of going over the same water, taking turns with the other rod.

thanks andrew, i fancy giving it a whirl. As its on my doorstep im not too worried by it being a short beat- but I can imagine its not so attractive to weekly lets that have to travel some way.

Fished it 2 or 3 times. Tyneandrew has it spot on. The lower part of the neck of Birkenbaud is good. I hooked a 12 pounder there but it is a c__t of a wade coming back ashore with it.

Macd, Knappach has changed for the better since they completed the work on their bank. It has changed the flow through Birkenbaud and it definately benefits Knappach side more than ever before. This is apparent when you look at what Brian catches from Crathes side now compared to before. Birkenbaud used to be his top pool. It isn't now!
The back of the island can also be good. There's a deep hole just where the steps come down.
It's definately worth a go now. 2 Swedes had 3 in a day back in March when I was fishing Crathes and they just casting shortish lines.

I'm on here the next two Saturday's and was hoping to get some more info.
I'm praying the rain forecast this week will stop before Thursday, as I gather Knappach is a low water beat.
I have read all the other posts and I guess that Birkenbaud is the pool adjacent to the Island, starting where the steep ladder comes down and fishing through to the end of the beat.
I was wandering if the floating bank at the top of the beat is worth a cast from the Knappach side..??

I think most the floating bank is fished by Invery , the tail of the floating bank might be on Knappach side

I can only agree with the above. Fished three times and had fish on each occasion. Wading is pretty hard going - take a stick and life-jacket. Plenty of water for two rods. I wouldn't mind a syndicate rod on that beat, Ross Looking at flies, I recall a T&S where the writer discussed this beat and the Knappach Shrimp.
