Hi All, Another new face to the sport. I've just booked my first fishing holiday on the River Nith in July, fishing around the town of Sanquhar. While ostensibly fishing for sea trout we thought we would have a crack at the salmon. Apart from catch returns I know little about this part of the river, size, depth etc. So would appreciate some guidance on what set up would be suitable. I'm thinking 13' #9 but like i've said I've only seen photos of the river. Should explain a little, this is obviously my first attempt at salmon, but have fished stillwaters for trout so have some working knowledge. This, I'm sure, will be the first of many salmon trips so I'm also thinking to the future. Any other hints and tips on how to tackle this river section for salmon(and sea trout) would be gratefully received.

Greetings Shedhed Salmon don't usually reach Sanqhuar in any worthwhile number in July unless we have a very wet spell. Sea trout will be there, but be aware the Solway rivers have had a big and unexplained dip in seatrout runs since 2003. In July I think you would be a lot better off, and at least see plenty of fish, down by the tidal bit of the Nith in Dumfries. I used to fish a lot there and it can be v.good. Not cheap these days but at least you'll be in with a chance. Baliffs will put you right, Barry will show you the best bits.

Hi Stoater thanks for replying, is that a subtle way of saying that it's not worth bothering about and concentrate on the STs. Furthest downstream we might get is mid nithsdale, but that's only an outside chance(friend of an acquaintance type of thing) But if it is worth a pop as a diversion what size tackle would you recommend.

Get yourself the most reliable prayer mat that you can find and then spend every available minute on it between now and your holiday speaking to the rain gods. You're in for a hard time otherwise. You really need a LOT of rain that far up the river.Hope you prove me wrong.

Eh up shedhead, look to Mid Nithsdale at Thornhill at that time of year you will be better off if you get rain but if not fish for Sea Trout (using your trout gear).Try the Red Broos,Hedge End and Wee porters.Fish through the dark in the first two pools you will have to get right across (inches from the bank) ally 1" tube silver stoat wade quietly in Hedge End,down to Wee porters at first light for a Salmon(double hander will be better here to spey cast).Catching wont be impossible but you could make it easier by getting lower down still. There is a Nith web site listing all the beats which will help.

OMG ibm69 , Sounds like I should of put all the money towards a week at centre parcs with the missus ;D Basically I am going for the ST 1st annd foremost. But with the Wye, usk and severn close to me and they being better salmon rivers than ST it would be good to get some experience on a taylor made fishing holiday, however limited (very by the sounds)but even if i just use it for hot casting practice, i'll be happy. As I am most definately going to get into this salmon lark Rennie we may get a day on mid nithsdale. You mention using a double hander, will the 13' I've mentioned be ok.

Well ... nothing huge to report, but the trip itself was a success. Fish wise only small brownies and parr caught by myself, templedog exceeded this on the tuesday morning with a nice clean healthy sea trout of 2lb 6oz with another two lost. The river was above base with a slow but steady drop during the week. It must of been the longest dry spell up there all summer. water visibilty got clearer during the week as well. Though the river was not massively up I reckon there was enough water for fish to travel up. Locals in the know suggest that fish had gone through the system in the previous 6 weeks of ups and downs and not settled anywhere inparticular. a local non angler reported large fish in the smaller tribs up the system. Neither of us saw a fish move all week. Heavy rain freshened the river up on the friday, but by then we had finished. Finished the week off with free tuition and guidance on the Drumlanrig estate water organised by a local tackle shop. Flies of the week were blue charm and peter ross. Locals seem to fish exclusively the deeper faster gullies with worms. The week whetted my appetite and I will certainly be checking out the rivers more local to me for the rest of the season. ;D
