Am off to the Dee tomorrow in search of my first salmon. I've just finished a six month contract and am so looking forward to a week on Waterside & Ferrar that i booked back in february.I work freelance and never really can book any kind of holiday in advance, but this time I decided, to hell with it, I'm going to book something no matter what.I've kept an eye on Fish-Dee website for weeks now, and see that fish are being caught slowly but regularly.I've still to land my first salmon but, as ever, am so optomistic.Have stocked up on small patterns and added some flies for sea trout such as Stoats Tail, Teal & Blues, Hairy Marys etc. From advice gleaned on the forum I gather the best advice is to concentrate first on floating line and smaller flies. Don,t know what the weather is going to do this coming week but think that the rain over the last couple of days can only be good.
I really hope that next week I'm back on the forum with a report of a successful trip. Wish me luck
Cheers

At least you will have a drop of water in - good chance you will have some action if you stick with it. Sea trout seem to be building up nicely and there will be an odd salmon about (just not many). Crathie had 5 on Sat.
Tight lines and look forward to hearing how you get on. Have fun!

Iainjay, Have fished W&F a few times - some lovely pools. There is a small pot like lie called "dog's hole" just above the hut on the left bank before the main flow tumbles into the long pool below (opposite the steep bank fringed with conifers at the head of the slope). Don't forget to take the odd Cascade size 10's - they've done well for me before and at risk of earlier repetition, (from a previous thread many moons ago), ... yes, ... I have pulled one out of the dog's hole before !! Just don't go bragging about it in the Monaltrie at night though !!
Cheers,
Altmor.
PS Think the Monaltrie is no more saddly - turned to the developer's profit wad - but hey ... nothing stays the same ...

Good luck The river is up a bit after yesterday's rain although it's now running steady. There could be some colour so a Cascade would be a good choice. There is rain forecast for the week ahead so take your bigger flies. Silver Stoats are working well at the moment. Monaltrie is no more...no loss after the mess it was during the last few years

You are quite right about Monaltrie Hotel , what a dump, stayed there for a week about 2 years ago I think, fishing Craigendinnie
Swatted a wasp on the widow last morning I was there & the whole window glass caved in!
Paid my bill & left
Met Archie the Gillie at Crathie during the week, what a character
Also seen members of the Royal Protection Squad in a bar, guns visible every time their jackets fell open Scary stuff

Altmor, did the developer have a good building surveyor though...........................? Nope ... but I hear his agent's a dab hand at midnight maneuvers in Kelso, whilst suitably plied with 6 bottles of finest Chateau Neuf du Pape and a large, individual beef wellington !! Cheers Zep, catch up soon. Altmor

Presumably the Hollandaise sauce boat was built at Govan. DTYS! ZH. Chapped it was Zep, (by "smile a minute Ronnie"), ... and now the lynch mob will no doubt be onto yours truly. What you didn't care to mention, (or forgot between bottles), were the 19lbr, 22lbr and 17lbr all caught on the same day and released. A 75% C&R rate - evens that of the mighty Spey returns, and allows me to hold my head up high amoungst the most ardent of conservationists. PS it was a cock fish too and made for excellent eating for a X-mas houseparty of 14 merry freeloaders for 3 days !! Wouldn't dream of smothering the fish in Hollandaise - got a quote from Clyde Chandlers to build a "boat" to spec ... and that knocked that on the head !! Whilst not trying to remind you of your Triad negotiating skills, I hear the elite SWAT team layed siege to your residence recently - did those same skills come in to play then ? Cheers, Altmor.

The Triad SWAT team were indeed round at Zephead Towers as I was trying to leave for a BBQ at Loss Adjustment Villas.
Full-on job,6 coppers with shooters, full evacuation of the townhouse and lots of shouting at the slopes.
High spot was when 6 guys walked round the corner straight into the armed siege dressed as Umpa Lumpah's on their way to a fancy dress party-top class.
After that we had the underground car park set alight on Monday evening.
I'm thinking of moving to Glasgow now I've had some experience of living in an "edgey" 'hood.
Sure I recognised one as our Taxi driver as he was askking the copper whether he preferred red or white wine....................

I'm thinking of moving to Glasgow now I've had some experience of living in an "edgey" 'hood. Nae danger Zep - you stick to the east - takes many moons more experience than a wee siege and bonfire to hack it thro' here. Aye ... I was thinking of moving through to dark east side - purely for a bit of peace and security ... ahhh ... the easy life.

No luck at all Iain. But yes - 10 / 10 for trying. What beat on the Dee were you at, and were other Dee beats as unproductive this week. Not the number of fish around as in previous years - that's for sure. Sorry - noted it was Waterside and Ferrar in earlier post - did you try "dog hole" ?

Yes altmor, I had a few goes at the dog's hole, so to speak. As for other Dee beats, I think the whole river suffered this week.Ghillie was saying on Wednesday that only 3 fish were landed from Aberdeen to Glen Shee.Spoke to a couple of anglers in Ballater and like everyone else, they saw a few fish but none seemed interested in anything offered. My first time on the Dee so cant compare this particular beat with anything else but had some really nice stretches of water.
