Done a lot of spinning for salmon, and a lot of trout fly fishing. Going to start salmon fly fishing. Got a daiwa whisker 13ft rod and a vision kona reel. The rod is rated 8-10#. The line is 9-11#, the guy in the shop seemed to think it would be no problem. What do you reckon? It's still boxed so I could return it,but if it will be ok I'll use it. Any thoughts?

What make of line is it? just that some are heavier than others, is it a spey line as it has a wide rating (possibly a Rio Windcutter) where DT lines usually just have 2 weights. I would say that it will be ok. As you are using a 13' rod I would guess that you are not fishing a big river and so some shorts cast will need to be made and having a slightly heavier line will aid loading the rod on short casts. You will enjoy fishing with the fly more than spending hours breaking your back spinning, and you will catch more fish !

Thanks, Wilbert. It's a Michael Evans twin line with a short head. The guy in the shop (Glasgow angling centre) seemed to really know his stuff and I took the rod in as well to get everything matched. I'll be mainly fishing the Don in Aberdeen so there won't be a lot of enormous distance casts. I'll spin to the end of the season and spend some time in the winter down on the playing fields looking like a plank casting on grass! Next year's plan is a salmon on the fly if it kills me!!
