fly rod action

Can someone tell me what is meant in lay man's terms by the description given on a salmon fly rod of Fast action or Medium action,etc?

Not sure significant it is to know but for the size/type of river you are fishing,type of lines and flys assume it must be a factor?

Thanks for the explanation Springer,as a relatively "new" Salmon Fly angler-spun and bait fished almost exclusively for 25 years+ until this season-i appreciate the help of experts such as yourself as i broaden my fly fishing knowledge.
