How do you mix buck tail without making a mess and keeping the length of the hairs the same. At the moment I am cutting the colours I need and then mixing them by hand on the table, this gets a good mix but the lengths are all over the place and the flies / tubes can look a little scruffy because the hair lengths are not equal as they were before I started to mix them. I have a hair stacker but cant get to grips with it, maybe I am putting too much in it to work correctly?
Any tips are more than welcome.

Wilbert,
I do not like hair stackers. In fact I like the scruffy look on a tube fly. I think that if the hair is of different lengths it gives the fly a little more 'life' in the water.
If you do want your hairwings the same length and wish to achieve this by the use of a hair stacker, then there is one important step. You must get rid of under fur and any shorter, unwanted hairs. Once you have cut the hair that you want, grip the bunch by the hair ends, or thin end. While gripping the thin ends, ping or slap the thick ends with a finger for a while. You should notice some shorter hairs and underfur falling out.
This should help you with the hair stacker and may eliminate it's requirement. However, I still think that they are a poor tool for the job!

Same here, keep it scruffy! If you find you are getting in too much of a mess trying to mix the hair just tie the colours in separately. Spread each sparse bunch of hair evenly around the tube and you wont be able to see the join Tight lines Andy
